...is this thing on? (sorry, had to get a Simpsons reference in here somehow)

So I'm Andrew from Montreal, Canada. Long time lurker, first time poster. I got back into the hobby about 2 years ago after about a 20 year hiatus. I guess I was around 12 years old when I saved up my $5 a week allowance to buy the 5th edition starter set, which was $100 plus tax back in 1996. It took me so long that I started saving for the 4th edition set and ended up with the 5th edition set, but that was a good thing since I was obsessed with dinosaurs as a kid (I'll bet I'm not the only one here who was). I kept the Lizardmen and gave the Bretonnians to my little brother. We used to play against each other using these armies, and we would make paper cutouts to use as the models we couldn't afford, which is kind of hilarious, thinking back on it.

I never managed to paint all the models, but I did paint a good chunk of them and, from what I remember, I also had a Kroxigor or two, a Salamander, a Slann and a Saurus leadership team (whatever it's called). I had no idea how to paint back then, but I'd love to be able to see what I had done. Unfortunately, these models have disappeared and I assume my mother threw them away.

Fast forward to October 2018 and, on a whim, I looked up the Games Workshop website to see what I was missing after so many years. I was honestly baffled by Age of Sigmar - the army breakdown didn't make sense anymore, and I found the models almost too detailed. Fortunately, I still liked the look of the Lizardmen/Seraphon models, so I grabbed a box of Start Collecting Seraphon. I did a ton of reading and watching videos to figure how to put together and paint the models the right way, and about 6 months later I had a fully assembled and primed box and 12 painted Saurus Warriors. They certainly aren't competition quality, but I was happy with how they turned out given that I was basically a newbie. I then started on the Cold Ones, but I didn't find them as fun to paint. I ended up going on vacation and dropped the hobby altogether for over a year.

Fast forward to November 2020 and, after buying a box of Kroxigors, I decided I would try to paint them before the impending birth of my son. I ended up painting all three in about 9 days, which was a much faster pace than the Saurus Warriors. I now have an 11 day old son and, somewhat ironically, I'm now fully back into the hobby. I've made progress on my Cold Ones, laid down the base coat on my Carnosaur (I got inspiration for the colour scheme from a painting blog on this forum) and I just ordered a box of 20 Saurus Warriors and a Start Collecting Skinks box. I haven't managed to convince my son to start miniature painting yet, but I'm working on it.

So basically I'm posting here not only to finally introduce myself but to keep myself motivated to continue painting. We'll see how it goes now that my life has changed completely!

Great story! (I also did a 20 year break and got back into the hobby last year)

There is still an active community for the 8th edition and 6th edition (look up Eighth Edition for Life), so don't feel pressured that you HAVE to go into AoS

    Anyways, welcome to Jurassic Park!

You're bang on that a lot of us are here due to a love of dinosaurs!

There is a fantastic painting area of the site which has a lot of helpful people on technique and method (not to mention admiring your posted pictures of your work).

Hopefully you can get back into playing somehow as well! (Maybe introduce the new generation when they come of age ;) )

Either way, enjoy! Remember that no question is too stupid (believe me, I've asked some dumb ones)

Thanks! My goal is to have a fully painted 2,000 point army, and with my two new boxes I’ll be pretty close. I’m not sure if and when I’ll get to play AoS; I only have one friend who’s into Warhammer and he’s decidedly more into 40k. He’s also mad that his Tomb Kings have basically disappeared from the new game. But maybe he’ll be up for playing an earlier edition - I assume that can still be easily done with the current Seraphon models.

    Try him on 8th edition.

If you get stuck on the rules or need help, there are a bunch of the "Knights of Eight" who will help (see the Warhammer Fantasy section of the forum)

@NIGHTBRINGER @Killer Angel and I all play Tomb Kings so can sympathize with your friends anger.

Good to know! I just looked for a PDF of the 8th edition rulebook and it's a whopper. I'm not sure how well it would work with my models' round bases, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Judging by the time you said you were last playing, it would have been 6th edition and you can probably find a rulebook for that if you want.

Either way, hope you have fun with it. I'm biased as I love 8th and would honestly recommend it over the others.

    Welcome along!
And welcome back in the hobby.

Getting in to the community here certanly kept me motivated during the struggle that is assembling and painting the Saurus Knights ;)

I am curious to see your painting progress.
Be sure to start a painting blog to show off your models and ask for Help(if needed)
    The Community is very helpful.

    See you around

    Thank you both!

Saurus Knights are, um, not my favourite in the line of Seraphon models. I suppose they were responsible for me falling out of the hobby last year. Oh, and by the way, my SC Seraphon box contained a defective Cold One sprue, so I contacted GW and they sent me an entire box of Saurus Knights for free and now I can make up to 15 of them. Yay?

I’ll consider doing a painting blog, since it almost seems mandatory for membership at this forum. :D

    Some converting material ;)
I have two SC boxes and with a lot of Patience I got 8 of them painted... The rest is still waiting for the first drop of paint

I decided to make 10 of them, since I recently realized that units should be in multiples of 5 if I ever manage to play a game of AoS. Games Workshop is sneaky like that, I noticed...

Not mandatory, but it's nice to see everyone's work!

I, for instance, have not started one as while I am into the battles, lore and general chat, I haven't started on painting.

If I decide to post a blog, it would be to invite criticism rather than to show off my painting skills! In any case, I can't really take decent pictures until I get the expensive new lamp my wife is gifting me for Christmas. Thankfully, she says I won't have to wait until Christmas to use it, I just have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. :)

I'm a little late to the welcome party, but I will say I had a similar hiatus and return from the hobby that you did. Here is my standard greeting for self identified lurkers.

Posting here has worked so far to keep my motivation up. I’ve made good progress on my 10 Cold Ones and I hope to finish them before the end of the month. I’m even considering painting a Blood Bowl team since another friend of mine plans on starting a league next year. Remains to be seen if I end up going with Lizardmen or if I broaden my horizons.

    Sounds like a plan.

You should make your own painting blog, then you'll get more notice and more conversation/compliments to spur you on.

You will also then be in the right place to get any tips for painting.

I’m considering it. :) We’ll see how much time I can find to paint once my paternity leave ends next week.
