…so I picked up Lord Kroak today for my Seraphon army. I’m much more of a hobbyist and only a casual player (not competitive, just want to have some fun), but I’d really like to use Lord Kroak. With his rule changes, did I make a mistake?

    Thanks in advance

He's a fantastic model so you did the right thing.
And he's still strong... but you must support him with points (astrolith bearer, guards...)

Seraphon is the strongest army in the game right now so if you are just playing casual just about everything is good.

In tournaments people have been playing the basic slann over lord kroak because the slann provides all the amazing board wide damage and unbinding utility as kroak at a cheaper price.

That said, last week the 55 man Kent grand tournament 1st place list was thunder lizards with kroak and 2nd place list was koatl's claw with kroak. The thunder lizards list had no astrolith bearer or saurus guard while the koatl's claw list did. So really you can run kroak however you want and still win.

Lord kroak is an amazing model that looks good on the board and is very fun to play with. Just enjoy yourself.

Kroak is definitely pretty awesome. It's just that some people don't like that there's a chance he can kill himself on a miscast, is more likely to miscast because of how many spells he can cast (he really should have gotten Teclis' auto-cast rule, or Teclis shouldn't have gotten it:p), and can generally die to a random roll after a fairly small amount of damage. He's pointed as an 18-wound model, but he effectively can take only around 9-10 damage before he's very likely to die.

That said, as long as you have a unit of Saurus Guard to soak up some of that damage, he can still really kick some butt on the table.
