    I'm surprised you did not combine those loves and make a custom Chapter based around the Space Wolves - the Sons of Romulus. Legend has it Romulus and Remus were raised by wolves before they founded Rome...

    I mean that firstborn offer a certain amount of choices but almost none of them was mono-specialized, so each unit was flexible.
    Examples:

    Devastators can be equipped with lasers (becoming specialized anti-tank), with heavy bolters (anti infantry) or missile launcher (both).
    Primaris eradicators are just a a heavily specialized anti tank unit.

    Firstborn scouts usually cover the sniper role, but you can give them a missile launcher, thus adding some anti tank to your list.
    Eliminators are glorified snipers.

    Tactical squad can be "cheap" bodies on obj with light shooting, but they can also pick a lascannon (and 3 squads with lascannon were by themselves a nice antitank). Intercessor squad are just bodies with light stooting.

    Hellblasters is a glorified elite killer unit.
    And so on...

    BTW, this was also one if the reasons why SM was a friendly beginner army. But now you have a plethora of choices, with so many specialized unit, that a beginner is scared by the sheer amount of units to pick from.

    Hmm... for some dumb reason I never thought of that.

    Not to mention Velites in the Republican Era wore wolf skins...

    And some Roman Standard Bearers wore wolf skins right up to the Imperial era...

    Fortunately I didn't apply any transfers to my models and just kept them painted dark blue. I might steal that idea, cheers mate!

    I've even read a BOLS article ruminating on the possibility that the Leagues of Votann are going to essentially replace the Firstborn Space Marines in terms of playstyle and unit roster, which would explain the Squats' transformation from Imperial Guard Dwarfs into Space Marine Dwarfs. It would have been a good idea to re-use the mechanics of a to-be-canned army if GW had actually made them more Dwarf-like.

    SM firstborn are the backbone of 40k lore.

    Not saying it's not going to happen, but it would be awful.

    I do agree, a fair few people who didn't get involved with the Primaris lark would be alienated at such a decision. I thought GW had learned the mistakes of alienating fanbases of existing armies by now...

    The fact (probably) is that the market was already saturated by firstborn. The only way to massively increase the selling of SM models was to introduce a new generation of marines.
    And any future evolution will come from that.

    I don’t think it will be done immediately.
    My prediction is that with the 10th ed. we'll have TWO main SM codexes: firstborn and primaris.
    And Primaris will be the only ones in 11th.

    I just can't see how GW can continually spam out new Editions of 40K, surely the way it is now would be fine if they stopped making new Codices so broken and stopped the pointless requirement of buying a new Chapter Approved annual every year and just released the new scenarios as free PDFs...

    Yes. And this is exactly the problem.

    Sacrificing gaming and enjoyment for cash.

    Well, it's not my business so I guess I have to a) buy out majority stock in Games Workshop or b) stick with 8th Edition ( ;) ).

    You have my undying support there mate :woot:

    This I think would be going a bit far though, otherwise we'd be no better than GW cancelling Fantasy and replacing it with AoS. Just bring Fantasy back so that us Old Guard can get some support again, while simultaneously keeping AoS in for the Young Guard to enjoy, and give both equal amounts of love. That way everyone's happy and there is no more favouritism, divisiveness or jealousy.
