    When Pickett's charge was falthering, he planted his hat on the point of his sword to rally the scattered troops for a final push, to show them that a commander was still leading the assault.
    They broke the first line of the union defenses, marking "the "high water mark". He was deadly shot while he was turning a union cannon battery agains the boys in blue.
