A question about painting shields

So I'm currently painting Saurus shields and would like to paint a symbol on each.

I'm hesitant to try freehand and thought it may be worth asking if anyone has come up with a way to create/use/apply some sort of stencil, template or stamp for the sake of saving time and having more consistency?

Thank you.

The shields are very uneven. I think it would be more practical to spend the time you would have been tapping to practice the pattern over and over again on sketch paper and attempt the freehand. Tamiya does make very nice masking tape though. I would recommend using theirs to create your stencils.

Not sure how well a stamp would work on the shields surface, but it is worth a shot.

I think that's a fair point. I'm always looking for ways to save time and I think this is an area where effort is required.

I'll definitely practice on scraps, good way to start. Thanks @LizardWizard .
