Army color theme, what color should I use for shields?

Hey all!

I started to paint my army, I just finished my first (ever) model. It has the colors Id like to use for the whole army, but I have no clue for a nice and fitting shiled color. Could you give me advice?
Here is a pic of the first model (needs to be glazed, it didnt arrive to my store yet ):

The way I do it is my core units have green shields and the champion has red. My cold one cavalry have red shields and the champion has yellow. As if a step-up in rank.

Thats my theory anyway

I usually make my shields the same color as the scales on my stegadons and other monsters; since they are the only ones large enough to make shields from. My beasties have red scales so that's the color of the infantry shields.

My skinks are all bluish green. I paint all of my shields red to make them stand out. I'm not making my guys super camouflaged, so I want them to look striking when they are on the board. Maybe green would stand out nicely against the red skin?

Now, were my guys an actual army, I'd either have green mottled shields, or more of a tree bark pattern. In my mind, skirmishers should be stealthy, so camo is good. However, since you are painting your guys red, I'd say stealth is out the window

You could make the shields black so that it feels like a scale from one of your bigger lizards, but that may be too much black.

I had the same idea to paint the shields the color of the monsters scales, thats a pretty fair idea. But theyll be the same red-black models... Id try to avoid using the same colors. Worst case scenario is the black, at least it look good with the other parts, but meh, there should be a better option! As you pointed out, there would be too much black.

The idea behind this color sheme was to make an army wich looks agressive, and inspires fear in their enemies heart^^ Green might be an option, have to make some test shields. In my opinion, if green, it should be kinda mayan style.

I second the green shields. My Lizardmen are green and I gave my units red shields. It provides a nice contrast to the green and really helps give a uniform look to my army.

Green would give the most contrast for the colour scheme at hand now.
However I think brownish yellow or yellowish brown would be quite nice and natural looking also. That would be my suggestion.

I am a big fan of the idea that shields don't come in a regular color, they're beast scales, and as such should look the part, my original skinks used different colores shields all around. While i guess it's easy enough to color them, the color would eventually wear off, and even then, i doubt work would be wasted recoloring the shields to be pretty on anything less than a Cold One rider.

I made some test shields according to your suggestions. The colors are a bit darker then they are in real. Here is a pic:

the top left one is more blueish, the base was sotek green, washed with nuln oil, highlighted with temple guard blue and white scar.

My vote goes to the top left one, too. It gives nice contrast, but is not as strong, contrast-wise, as green. I have a multitude of Saurus with different coloured shields on my plog (can be found from my signature), if you are interested to see, how they could look like. It's one of the first pages, 2nd or 3rd. Good luck with your painting!

I like them all, and i wouldn't mind seeing a unit with all them, having coherency from their crests and colors

Given your army scheme id go with the black ahields for the core and the blue to denote the champions and the blue for you tg and cav. And the orange for their champs it will give a nice pop and contrast to the army.. another color scheme you might want to look into is a dark purple with a light to pastel purple highlight

Nice shields. Just wondering how do you get the highlights? Do you do a dark base then highlight or use light base then darken main area? And I think the green or hthe ice blue looking shield would look good with scheme.

they were basecoated with black spray, then i added a base color, washed it, reapplied the base color, but leaving the the center of the scales, then 2 layers of highlighting followed on the edges of the scales.

Ofc, feel free to use whatever method fits you All I know about painting is from youtube, there are great tutorials, here are some:

There are many more videos on youtube, but to get familiar with the basics, just spend this ~2,5 hours on watching these vids.
In my opinion, its is best to start painting on a medium sized model, like a kroxigor, its not too detailed and it has not so many tiny parts wich are the hardest to paint (according to me), you can try out everyting on this guy.
Also, painting does require patience, precision. Dont bother if the painting goes slowly, with practice it will speed up.

Hmmm... I rather like the top left one.

I agree, that's my favorite of the tests, though I like all of them but the top right, the shading doesn't seem to blend as naturally as the other four.

I like the top left and bottom left shields. Black will probably be too much.

My color scheme is green skin and scales depending on rank and funktion and red shields .
Green scales for saurus and skinks,
red for champs and TG,
blue for all riders /handlers.
Scar vets have red scales with white edges, old bloods even more white (the thought is that the scales has gotten ossified and hard)
