Here is what I do with my bases... it's a combination of muddy earth, gravel and something like gras/ moss or fallen leaves...
I add bigger stones or rocks, grass tuffs, tree trunks, mushrooms and bigger plants for a jungle look...


Not the best examples i guess... gonna take some better pictures... but maybe one can get an idea of what I do...
