8th Ed. Bolt Thrower vs Stegadon

Hi I have a question I hope you guys can help me with.

What happens if a Bolt Thrower hits a Stegadon? I guess the Bolt in will randomise what it hits. If it then hits 1 skink crew member and kills him, what happens next? is that all that happens or does the bolt penetrate and you then again randomise what it hits? or does it simply hit just that 1 skink and thats all? And ofc it is the same if it hits the Stegadon.

My guess would be per the rules that if it hits and kills a skink then it's "wasted". But it seems really unfair imo. If it hits the model it should be able to hit the stegadon too? I don't want to cheese my wins against my friends :) - It would make sense that if it hits the stegadon it cannot also hit the skinks though, seeing they are on top of it.

Edit: And how about vs Salamanders? There I would assume it is more clear cut that it cannot penetrate ranks and just hits either a skink or a Salamander.

it just klls one skinks, since their aint no ranks

You're not "cheesing" your friends if they pick the wrong targets to fire upon.
 
It's not the same with salamander since skirmisher units can have rank, and usually, salamanders are in the front rank and skinks behind them.

But for Stegadon, it is this way. Imagine that the bolt has been shot too high and just got on skinks before falling behind the steg.

Well the salamanders are not skirmishers, but monsters with handlers (that are skirmishers). So I belive they cannot penetrate it, since the handlers are just like counters that you can always move around if they are in the way..
 
Handlers don't exist, so they cannot be "in a rear rank".
 
The handlers don't count for much of anythign but I they do count as wounds for combat rez i hear.
 
They most certainly exist, you also risk hitting them instead of the Salamader when shooting :) (yay for wardsaves that are not really wardsaves!)
