8th Ed. BSB + Great Weapon?

Hello Everyone! I'm still new-ish with some rules so forgive me if this has already being disscussed here or if it's clearly stated in the rules ( I havn't found this yet)

Last night a friend of mine told me that you can NOT take a Great Weapon (or any two handed weapon) whith your BSB, because of the fact that he needs at least one hand to carry the Standard, Which makes sense to me but I wish to know the actual rule, you know to properly equip my Cowboy

Well the friend that told me this has been playing for a loooong time.. so it might well be an old rule.

A: Yes to both questions.
