Hello,
Just joined this forum, as it seems to be the place to talk about lizardmen.
I've been collecting warhammer for some time, with lizardmen as my primary army. I've come here as I've recently acquired a set of old lizardmen models on ebay, mainly metal spearmen from the 90's and am trying to figure out what they are.
The standard bearer and drummer in the set are very different to any that appear in the army books, or the various catalogue scans that are to be found online. I didn't collect warhammer in the 1990's so am not familiar with the old model range.
So I figured I'd ask you folks if these are particular figures, or whether they are conversions of some sort.

Both are saurus warriors and are made of metal. The bodies and faces look a lot like the old plastic saurus warriors, but made of metal. The drum has a swirling design, very different to the plainer drums of other metal saurus. The standard bearer is much the same, some of the bits on the standard look as though they might be handmade using milliput, but the sun-disk at the top looks like a genuine warhammer piece.
So does anyone know whether these are old models which didn't make it into the army books, or are they conversions of their previous owner?
Either way they will soon be painted up and leading my legions into battle!
Many thanks

Are they the Metal 5th edition Saurus ?

The bodies certainly look like 6th edition Saurus, not seen their equipment before however. Possible conversion?

Agreed. Those are 5th edition Saurus that have had conversions done to them.

Eh, no. The one in the pic from @Eccentric_Circle is a plastic guy. If they're really metal than I have no idea. Unless they were cast by the owner? Or dipped in something.

Also, welcome to the forum! All these sneaky new user posts are tripping me up, haha.

The old Saurus warriors were plastic, but then they had metal versions of the same model if you wanted spears.

I have a few of those plastic guys that were provided with metal spear arms. Plastic body; metal right arm.

Intriguing. Thanks for the help everyone.
I'd figured they were probably converted, although whoever made them certainly picked a good lizardmanish drum and sun disk. The fact that they are metal is whats really intriguing me. I've not stripped the paint off, but the tab underneath is definitely metal, and the figures are too heavy to be partially plastic with some metal parts. The standard bearer weighs 25g, and the drummer 20. This is the same weight, within the precision of my scales, as a completely metal standard bearer and drummer of the sort in n810's top picture. A plastic saurus warrior only weighs 5 grams.
I wondered if they used to make them in metal but then shifted to plastic, but I can't find any evidence of that online. Pre fifth edition lizardmen seem to have looked quite different.

Oh, yea those plastic Saurus from 5th edition where some of the very first plastic miniatures that warhammer made.
The starter set that year was Bretonians vs Lizardmen.

Ah, so maybe these ones were made just before they started making them in plastic.
Bretonians vs Lizardmen being the flagship product is hard to believe these days.

Has anyone seen this model before by chance? It was on Ebay a while back, and I got outbid at the last moment. Supposedly, it was an unreleased Saurus hero, but I haven't found another like it.

They look like the plastic starter kit saurus to me. But i have some metal 5th ed. spearmen, so i can have a look when i get home (but pretty sure these ones are plastic).

looks like an alternate Chakax..?

That is actually not entirelly true!
4th edition allready had plastic mini's (goblins and high elfs in starter kit)....and even before that i think there were some plastics.

But yeah, the plastic age really picked up during 5th/6th.

I had no idea. :cyclops:
hadn't seen the other starter.

Pretty sure you have seen these guys before, these are the 4th ed starter Elfs. But the 5th edition starter models were as far as i can remember, the first plastic lizardmen.
