Blog Craken's Lizards

Hello! Sorry to necro this thread (although I think anyone who hasn't seen it will appreciate!), but I really want to try this conversion for myself. I was making a skinks only army specifically because I couldn't get past how weedy the saurus models were.

I wanted to ask though, if Craken notices this, was there anything that posed a really big challenge when you were converting these? I assume the tail sculpts were the hardest part. Other than that was it really just a straight forward head transplant?

Thanks for the inspiration nonetheless! I am even going to convert an oldblood/scar vet from the avatars of war savage orc hero model on foot. Maybe in the future I'll get a mounted savage orc hero and convert him into a saurus on a dark elf cold one.

I just made a new batch of 30 and I'm going to put a step by step guide, when I get to it.

This is it in a nutshell.

1) I gut the necks of the savage orcs with a scalpel to match the shape of the saurus head I'm attaching, you can do it without doing this step but I found it made the necks look really long and dorky.

2) Step 1 usually leaves a gap, cause its hard to get it perfect while eying it, so I simply fill the holes with greenstuff and smooth it out.

3) Add tails, I did it 2 ways the first time, 1 I added a rod and greenstuffed around it and 2 just rolled greenstuff and stuck it on. The both made about the same result so I think it's just preference.

4) Paint and your done.

Its really simple the cutting doesn't even take very long.

Have fun. Like I said WIP will be posted here soon.

Oh yeah another tip, leave the arms till after, the head and tail are done it makes it hard to work otherwise, also, the unit does take a little planning to fit together right.

That beefy saurus with the ax looks grest :smug:

wow
they look like a better version of old saurus warriors, and they are great, even if less lizard-like and more human(errr... orc)-like

Yay! More conversions! Very cool looking guys and excellent paint jobs. I like the underbelly of the Skinks. Very defined but natural looking.

He's very beefy, he's as tall as an ogre bull too!

Ya I like them this way, even though I loose the reverse joint.

Thanks!

Glad you guys like them, I'm paining up my Canadian skinks next ;)

I like that dynamic pose! Those skinks look great too!

On a side note, I have moved away from just GW models. I picked up some metal reaper minis (on discount) and a box of Malifaux models (to use in Mordheim). Those models are way more dynamic than the GW models.

They are more fragile as well.

Have you posted photos of these yet Arli? I love these conversions too, and they may end up pushing my plans for a Temple Guard unit in a new, unexpected direction...hmm...

Craken, any chance we can see a couple of these in a photo side by side with an original 5th edition Saurus?

I will take some pictures and post them. They are humans for a Warrior Monk Warband. After looking through the malifaux range, there aren't a lot (if any) lizard like models. However, the Hell Dorado range does have some really nice models that would work well for some of our models.

I would but they are the only Saurus I own, though I have a friend who play lizards if he ever brings them over I will
