Hi guys. Last Sunday, I played against my friend who play Skavens. In his army, he has one flamethrower and an unit of Stormfiends with one that use a flamethrower too. These flamethrower are pretty annoying because when they are in range, they deal 1D3 or 2D3 of mortal wounds, without having to roll dice. My problem is that if I don't kill these guys really fast, it's a real pain in my ass. So, my question is, what kind of defences, tactics against that kind of foe ?
No real defence against MW only thing you can try is to snipe them out fast or use a screen of cheap troops to save your more expensive units. What units did you use?
It was a small game. I used some ripperdactyl riders, slann starmaster, skink priest, skink starpriest, 3*5 saurus guards, eternity warden, salamander, skinks handlers, old blood on carnausor. It was a game of triumph and treason, and we were 3 players. In the end, I win, but I think it was only because my army has a little more points.
Thanks, but as I said, I had more points, we choose our army based on our wounds. And when we finished the game, I looked at our points, and I saw that I had 400 more points, so it's not a great victory in my perspective.
Unfortunately, not just Seraphon, but the whole Order Alliance is defenseless against MW, it is one of our weaknesses ! Not much to do besides positioning away your important units and kite them / focus them before they get to deal 2 much damage
They are literally the only Seraphon unit that is strong by themselves, no buffs and no synergies required to make them work and have impact
That's your problem. Saurus guard are a waste of points against mortal wounds. Think of it this way, you have a unit of 10 saurus guards for 200pts and a unit of 10 skinks for 60pts. Someone throws 5 MW's at each unit, you lose 100pts of saurus guards, but only 30pts of skinks. Now if it's the warpfire throwers you're on about which I'm guessing it is, they have an awful save, 3 wounds and an 8" range, stick a unit of 10 skinks 16" away from them, you can shoot them till they die and most likely never get hit by them forcing your opponent to focus resources into defending those warpfire throwers. Better still, a unit of 40 skinks has a 99% chance of killing them in one turn, you could even split their attacks and send 22 of those attacks at one of them with an 80% chance of killing one. Better still, you have everything you need to have a shadowstrike starhost, with a unit of 40 skinks in there, only 17 attacks are needed to give you an 85% chance of killing it. That said, saurus guard aren't a bad unit, and I know some people swear by them, but I think they require very careful deployment and you've got to be clever to not have them get killed by MW's. But hey, I love skinks.
I agree with everything you said. But, I have to play with the army I have. And for now, I have buying the figurine that I want to play and to paint. I'll buy mores skinks after, it's already plan And I really like my saurus guard, in their eternal host, to protect some tactical points

Yeah Skinks are probably our best choice against mortal wounds. Just because of their wounds/point ratio. And then something to snipe.
What I like to do is go for the Thunderquake Starhost, and get double bastiladon. Add a Slann Starmaster with the Vast Intellect trait, 2 Skink priests to get that reroll to saves and charges, and charge one of your Bastiladon in and give him the Swift stance. Next turn you can teleport your Troglodon/Engine of the Gods in, and he can then give you rerolls on saves with the Thunderquake ability as well as wound rolls. But not before you use your swift stance to let yourself reroll hit rolls in the shooting phase with the Bastiladon. Then move your other Bastiladon along with the two Priests to get the rerolls on saves for support Oh, and of course, lots of skinks! I like taking 2 units of 40 Skinks (each 200 points only), and a unit of 10 Skinks for objective control. It's pretty great so far!
Seems very good ! But I don't have all the stuff for that ... for the moment. I have to buy more and, I do it, little by little ^^
Take your time and love your miniatures one at a time. No need to rush, create your army steadily and enjoy the most out of it !
