Help Feathers on Skink priest

I just recently started painting a skink priest and i'm having a very difficult time of painting the feathers.

my current technique is to base the feathers in a bright red and dry brush incrementally upwards in the colours I want but it hasn't turned out at all how I wanted.

any tips?
 
I wouldn´t really drybrush the feathers as they usually have very few texture (if any). What I do is just draw thin lines by hand. I then wash them with agrax earthshade to tie it all together. Hope it helps :)

i'll give it a try. why earthshade? it's a little dark and there won't be any recesses for it to go into.

That´s exactly why, to darken it a bit as well as tie the colors together, but that´s just me, if it´s too dark for you taste then skip it. ;)
 
Are you painting them the same colours as the GW one? If so, I started with a uniform basecoat of yellow, and applied the other colours in thin glazes. Orange/red at the base and green/blue at the top. Takes a few coats.

I am, although I start with red and work my way upwards :)

I am doing the feathers the same as standard (tried looking at other feathers but they all were colours already used so i wouldn't get any contrast)
 
I just painted up my skink priest tonight, I found what worked best for me with the feathers was to drybrush my base of pink and purple and blue, do a couple of watered down washes, then I used a super fine brush with a non watered down wash to draw in the pattern of the feathers.

Super duper easy and gives them a little pop. Just a simple V shape with the ink and bam, insta feathers.

my only questions are what does the other side look like and why isn't he in the gallery? :D
 
Well now he's in the gallery haha.

We need more skink priests there, hardly anyone has the newer model there.

lmoffat please take some pics of yours when you can :D I'd love to see it. Reds sound amazing.

About a day after I posted I came down with REALLY bad flu so despite being off work for so long was actually not able/motivated enough to paint him, i'm thankfully better now (as of this morning) so I will get him painted and displayed soon.
 
The trick is to not be afraid to mix colours - oh, and the thinner the line the better. I would have tried washing but my noobness at painting scared me into just lines.tmp_8972-DSC_0041-624891180.JPG

Well my dad does play Skaven...

I know I'm a bit late to the game but I recently painted a Skink Starpriest, I've only painted about 30 models before this and I wouldn't say it was too tricky to produce average results. Anyway, the way I did it was to base coat it all in red. I then put a tiny bit of yellow paint on my brush and dipped the tip of that into water, I then applied it to the feather, from just above the base of the feather to the top, then, without cleaning my brush, I just got a tiny bit of red paint on my brush and blended the two colours together. I then just used water if the blend wasn't good enough to just soften the transition so it don't look so "liney". I did the same for the green. I didn't bother putting blue on as I didn't think it would look as good seeing as the majority of the model is blue already. I did each feather one at a time and these were the results. Looks ok from 3 foot away! I think some of the green could be better but hey, I'm still new to painting so it'll take a bit of time to learn.

That's a great technique and has produced great results! Your skink priest looks fantastic!

That's some great looking feathers, to be honest I got frustrated with myself and put the model on the back burner whilst I finish my Troglodon.

Ah! I'd be so scared of painting anything that big! I think I'd make a mess of it. Feel like you can get away with a lot more with the smaller models!
