So I've reached a point where I need to concentrate on a different aspect of the hobby so in this thread I'm going to discuss and post about the construction of a gaming board.

I will be using 2x2ft boards that will hopefully be inter changeable.

Hopefully in this thread I can develop with your help a gaming board that will be worthy of playing on.

So feel free to post ideas that will add to my concept, this won't be a quick project as I want it to be spectacular.

Good luck with that mate - I can already hear your wallet crying out in terror before it is suddenly silenced...

I have quite a few kits already I don’t think I need to buy any, maybe a warscyer citadel.

While I love the idea, I cannot stop thinking something like those images are quite unmanageable.

Do you plan to have the board out all the time, or stove it away in-between gaming sessions?

Is the idea to have large terrain elements permanently stuck down? How many 2x2 foot panels in total?

It’s the concept of it, I want to make it so it can be stored away.

Yeah the boards will have the scenery permanently applied, I’m thinking 6 tiles so a 6x4 table

This is something I’m hoping to do as well - hopefully we can help each other!

This is such a cool project to do. I look forward to seeing updates.

Do you have a setting in mind already? Are you going to be emulating the above pictures not just in concept but in location as well? (i.e. a temperate grassland with cliffs, hills and scatter terrain)

    OK....

I think step (1) is make the raw base tiles. Get them uniform and sanded smooth and snapping together with magnets on the edges, etc.

I’m thinking 48 magnets? With the poles setup so that each tile could theoretically be positioned 4 different ways. (Or, just 24 magnets if each snap Point was magnet-to-steel-washer.)

Step (2) Inventory the terrain kits you already have so that we all have an idea what there is to work with.

Step (3) choose the environment, the look or realm. ( Is this meant to go with your lizards? )

Step (4) start drawing a map.

I'm thinking of making an MDF base in 2 halves 6x2ft that interlocks with a slight lip around the edge that the 2x2 tiles will sit in, but I can only use that for a 6x4 table.

You can buy HIP sheets cut too size, I've seen one with a leather effect on ones side and smooth on the other, I think the texture of the leather finish might add some variety to the board.

This is a plan view of the board in the photos.

The purple is the big plateaux with the realmgate. The red is the other mountain with the call outs 1, 2, & 3. Since those pieces are permanently fixed they would occupy 2x4 foot tiles. Leaving just two square 2x2 foot tiles.

(It looks like it is one big 4x6 seamless table to me...perks of being made for the studio.)

Yeah your right it is a seamless table, so I need to develop each tile so it can interact with the others, I like the idea of something like the black gate from Lotr occupying 2 tiles but that won't allow them to be versatile with the others.

Something like Game of Thrones, The wall

Pendrake's comment reminded me that I actually was given the realm of battle modular board as a gift, so I quickly dug it out and grabbed a few photos for reference. I also measured the hills at a height of 2 and 1/4 inches higher than the plain. If it can be helpful to take particular photos or other measurements I am happy to do so.

That's excellent, I went to my local GW store and asked about Armies on parade and what board it has to be on, GW board or anything scratch built but not a third party resin board so if I use HIP it's allowed.

    This is the material.

Ok off the top of my head these are the kits I have.

    1 Warscryer Citadel
    2 Fortified Manor
    2 Deathknell towers
    1 Sigmarite Mausoleum
    1 Set Baleful Realmgates
    2 Sylaneth Wyldwood
    1 Ruins of Osgilioth
    1 Ophidian Archway
    1 Azyrite Ruins
    2 Arcane Ruins

I think I need another Warscryer Citadel so I can cut it up into parts and a maybe a set of Fences.

So after our trip to Warhammer world I have lots of ideas.

The scenery will not be a permanent fixture as the height of the project will cause problems with storage but I'm buying the HIP sheets later this month ;)
