Make a wet pallette and thin the paint out a bit. Should go on slightly better.

I think the paint is too wet as it is its a layer paint and just thinly spreads itself everywhere i'll try use a pallet though see if that helps I need to do a second layer because my hit rate was about 50% the first try :p

White primer and auric amour gold? its behaving like the ink stuff I used to use to use for lord of the rings way back - you know a wash maybe? where u let it seep into reeceses for effect?

Gold and white are always troublesome colors, the best advice I can give u is patience, and by this I mean dont expect to cover the area using a single layer, for this paints do the following instead:

    1. Don't overload the brush with paint (to avoid pooling and covering the details of the model)

    2. Paint using many thin layers instead of a single thick one. I know it is frustrating and even if the first layers appear to be transparent, keep going. The finall result will be worth it

3.for the gold, you can mix it with a bit of brown, yellow, orange, or silver depending on what is closer to what you want the color to look in the end. This will help with the coverage

@SlanntaClause oh ya if you primed in white and then trying to.do any metallic is a pain took my like 12 layers for the gold to look right when I did that

Well you are not the only one who have had problems with that particular color. Maybe it is just that that color is more susceptible to being too thin.

But your problem should be solved with the advice of the painting pros.

Honestly I should have asked on here before asking the Warhammer shop guys advice on it he wasn't all that helpful or interested to be honest - I might try borrow my brothers paints he got a few when we were in the shop together. Its a tiny distraction from my conversion model - I have steps planned but for some reason haven't done any to it for a day or so.

@SlanntaClause - put a layer of Leather (medium to light tone) brown down before you do gold. This will help it be a more true gold color. Then I'd mix a bit of the same brown in with the gold 1scoop of brown to about 2-3scoops gold if it's as thin as I'm picturing. Or - take the pot back, show him how awful it is, and get Balthasar gold base instead. You can then mix it with varying amounts of silver to get your highlights (thin it out on a wet pallet for this or it'll be too thick for layering)

Hopefully starting on my entry tomorrow - provided my stubbornness lets me put what I'm working on on hold :p

I try to work with limited colours, I tend to be around 5ish so you don't need loads of paints to get a good effect, just choose them carefully.

Thanks once more I was considering taking back the pot - this was after stiring it in for a few mins the stuff just returns to the top and makes it hard to gauge if you actulley get any gold on your brush when you dip it in:

    IMG_2166.JPG

It was all the way to the top when I opened it its like a milky substance - oh well the first layer turned out okayish so maybe just re-layering a few times is the way to go

That looks pretty dodgy to be honest. I tend to base in leathery browns and build up through copper colours for gold. It worked pretty well with Grey knights anyway.

Yeah, that's the reason I gave up on metallics, all the ones I bought were like that. I did try out the Vallejo ones and they're much more consistent.

Is it ok if I put an entry into the Lizardmen painting category? I've just come from a big win in another competition and I want to see if I can get a streak going.

Why wouldn't you be allowed to? Of course you should enter. That's why the master tier was created... gives us mere mortals the opportunity to (enviously) watch the divinely skilled painters of this forum battle it out.
