My one gripe with 40k and warhammer as a whole is that they have this massive universe that is literally dripping with lore, stories, and entire worlds thick with detail that has the potential to make a series of films to rival the marvel universe or games to rival the renown of world of warcraft or call of duty.
But they fuck ti up every single time. Why can't they make ANYTHING decent out of Warhammer? Two games spring to mind, Dawn of War (first one) and Total war: Warhammer. That's it. Everything else is a steaming pile of garbage and it annoys me. I have no doubt that this will be no different.
There's a bunch of good ones.
- Space marine: spectacle fighter you're a space marine, you shoot/punch stuff. Has some interesting multiplayer modes, though since the game is old I doubt you'l find many people to play with.
- Mechanicus: turn based strategy, you're a techpriest raiding a necron tome. Bit repetitive though towards the later missions as you start running into the limitations of the customisation system and your techpriests no longer really improve. Also the arbitrary deadline is a bit annoying.
- Spacehulk deathwing: you're a terminator going into a spacehulk, shoot/punch stuff. Great atmosphere and guns. Bit repetitive though, there aren't that many possibilities for different enviroments in a spacehulk just loads of corridors and open areas in broken down spaceships.
- Battlefleet gothic I & II: fleet simulation. You gotta like the genre though.
- vermintide is supposed to be good
- DoW II is also good, though a very different game from I (and III is just too different from both of these, which pissed off the fans and caused it to flop despite it not being truly terrible)
- Chaosbane is decent, though diablo clones are so common that decent isn't enough to stand out from the crowd.
- Gladius: capable 4X game
- Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor: another diablo clone, was promissing when I got the early acces haven't played it in a while though.
- Mordheim: mordheim but digital
- bloodbowl: bloodbowl but digital
- Regicide: a weird chess-game, quite fun though. Mixes chess with warhammer. basicly your chess pieces now have guns so you can take the king by regular chess rules or by repeatedly shooting him.
- Sanctus reach: turn based strategy supposed to be quite good.
There's also some older games that were decent, I have some old strategy game that was quite fun (set in WHFB).
And that's just the ones I know of.
GW has taken a scattergun approach to this. And although it does occasionally lead to some amazing stuff it does also mean there's a lot of garbage.
