8th Ed. Hiding Skinks ?

If I place a skink character in a saurus unit, can it be targeted? The rule book only shows examples of when a larger base goes into a smaller base unit.

Different base sizes only effect where the character model can be placed - it doesn't change any targeting rules. So the skink character could not be targeted by Ballistic Skill shooting as long as there were 5 rank-and-file Saurus. Template attacks could hit the skink, but he would still get a look out sir since the skink and saurus are both infantry.

So when the rule book says that a cav model (if it cant be placed neatly) needs to be placed outside a unit (if it joins an infantry unir) cant be targeted by ballistic skill missile fire?

Yes, a cavalry character in an infantry unit cannot be specifically targeted by normal (BS) shooting, as long as the infantry unit is large enough (5+ rank and file). However, the cav model would not get a Look Out Sir to protect from any template attacks since they are a different troop type from the unit.

But in the rule book it says that a character OF THE SAME UNIT TYPE cant be targeted ... If I had a saurus hero on a cold on in a unit of temple guards they are different unit types.. ones a Calvary and the other is infantry. Meaning the hero can be picked out ?

The 2nd paragraph under "Shooting" on page 99 of the BRB explains how to resolve hits with a character of a different unit type within the unit. Essentially the person who's unit it is allocates the shots as they see fit with the caveat that they must be spread as evenly as possible.

example: A unit of 10 saurus with a coldone-riding character take:

10 shots -

You may elect to have the saurus take all 10 hits or stick 1 on the character

11 shots -

Everyone gets 1 hit (10 on saurus, 1 on character)

12 shots -

Everyone gets 1 hit (10 on saurus, 1 on character), the last one can go on the saurus or the character at the discretion of the owning player.

There doesn't seem to be a rule about how you base your figures... Would it be possible to base your Skin on a Saurus base, and have him stack-up neatly?

The rule is you have to use the base size that came with the model when you purchased it. So swapping is not really an option.

Page 366 references that the rules govern the size of the base your miniature will stand on, we don't have any actual rule for it.
Giants come with 50mm and 50x75mm depending on if you have an old metal one, or a new plastic one.
Old Carnisaurs are 50 square, while new ones are on chariot bases.

I can't find anything that lets you use a different size base, other than using regiment bases for multiple rank and file. I'd really like my goblins on gigantic spiders to be on 40's, so they can hide in goblin units; but the official model is now on 50's.

Stick to the correct base size.
