8th Ed. Javelins or Fireleech Bolas?

Nooby question from a nooby player! I'm putting together a box of terradons but am umming and uhhing about whether to glue on the javelins or fireleech bolas. What would be better? (or whats the general popular choice)

not an expert but i think if regen is popular in your area then depending on points one unit with the fireleech bolas would be nice. hit a unit with regen then after it loses regen for that phase hit it with the rest of your shooting seems like it could be effective

I haven't built my unit of terradons yet so am in a similar position but am going to go for the flameleech bolas. Mainly because they look cool!

I'm not sure what other players are doing, but I'm sticking with the javelins. The only reason I'd want the fireleech bolas is to negate regeneration before the rest of my shooting. Since you need a wound on a model (not an unsaved wound, just a wound) to negate regeneration for the phase, I just don't see that as likely outcome when I only get 3 or 4 shots and have to roll to hit and to wound my target.

Javelins are massively better. The only time fireleech bolas would be useful is if you were tailoring your list against something flammable or with regen. Even then if we're talking trolls having to roll to wound on a tough target like that (i.e. not getting poison from javelins) probably negates the benefit from taking away their regen anyway.

Hmm I had forgotten about the loss of poison, but then don't flamming attacks cause fear or require leadership tests on certain units such as cav and war beasts so would carry a different benefit?

As for Bolas vs Javelins. I think I would paint the fire leeches badly (or give them sad faces), plus they would snap off instantly under the normal rigors of combat (Nephew of Bob is 4). Do the thing that looks best. If you want to play the alternative, then just PRETEND.

I have like 10 of the previous metal models so I guess Javelins.

I still have nightmares of trying to attach the wings onto those things...

Bolas are half the range but S4, better chance of wounding without poison. May depend on what you do with them. If they'll be up in people's faces then bolas are fine. If they'll be running around then 12" javs would be better than 6" bolas. But truthfully, if you tend to need 6's anyway to hit, then javs are better, despite not lowering AS by 1.

You probably have the right idea. We're talking about 3 or 4 points added to your armylist and no one expects those javelins on the terradons to do anything anyway.

I prefer the javelins due to the poison. Terradons often go hunting war machines, but they aren't particularly good in combat. If you can get even 1 wound on the machine from shooting in the turn before you charge, it can tip the balance of the ensuing combat well in your favor. Against T7 machines, i would rather have the poison.

Though being a kiwi lizard in Australustria I am of the Tuatara variety ,though its a shame they can't carry halberds

Yes, but Terradons cause Fear anyway so that doesn't matter.


Magnets are versatile. If you magnetize your Skink arms you can swap weapons and enjoy leeches or javelins as circumstances dictate. If you got to use just one, figure out what is more important. Fireleeches look slightly cooler. Javelins are slightly more useful in an all-comers environment.

Ranged attack is different to charging at something!

I would need super, super teeny tiny magnets to make interchangeable weapons for the skinks. I think I'll go with the javelins. I don't think it's really going to matter much since the 'dons will be dropping rocks and they already do cause Fear. I'll see what magnets I do have, I know I have small 1mm ones somewhere, but it will be very fiddly work. :/
