Why is it that you seem to hate anything that is wildly successful and enjoyed by the masses? Titanic was good movie, not my favourite but it is definitely a pretty solid film. That came out of nowhere. Wrong thread? Back on topic...
Are you kidding? It’s highly overrated and highly disrespectful - taking the focus out of the disaster that saw hundreds of people die and instead focus on a love story? I certainly don’t know why the masses loved it so much. This is a much more poignant and respectful adaptation: It does have romantic parts of the plot but it keeps the focus on the tragedy itself, and how we are to remember and learn from it. And before you say anything, it is rated 100% on RottenTomatoes and 7.9 out of 10 on IMDb, compared to Titanic being 88% on RottenTomatoes and 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb. One instance when the critics have far better taste. Also, I don’t hate everything that was loved by the masses - I like Avatar and Lord of the Rings, for example, both of which are extremely popular.
There is nothing wrong with the angle they choose for the film. It's not a documentary, it is a love story with the Titanic disaster set as the back drop. There is absolutely nothing wrong or disrespectful about that. On top of that, the movie did a great job at showing the tragedy of the whole incident. Those are some fun numbers... here are some others: A couple of things to consider: IMDb ratings of 7.8 vs. 7.9 are virtually the same, statistically I wouldn't use that as evidence for your argument The critics' rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes is based off of 19 reviews, that is literally just the opinion of 19 people. However, and more interestingly, the evidence you present still shows Titanic to be great (88%), even if its critical rating isn't as high as the other movie. Any kind of online voting (in regards to Rotten Tomatoes audience ratings) will favour A Night To Remember, because Titanic's own success will work against it by drawing out the haters, while an older movie (1958 in this case) is out of the general public's consciousness and thus will be typically rated by pre-existing fans of the movie I'd rather have $2.2 BILLION dollars in the bank than a pat on the back from a few critics! I'm not even making an argument as to which of the two movies is better, since I haven't seen A Night To Remember. Even if A Night To Remember is better, that doesn't make Titanic bad. Titanic simply told the story from a different viewpoint. Fair enough... I like those two movies too!
