I find I tend to favor the morningstar. Perhaps unfairly so. In the game system I made, it's most powerful one-handed weapon for the purpose of armor penetration.
A quarter staff is better at defense but the best defense is taking out your enemies quickly.
I like the aesthetics of a flanged mace.
Flails allow some gimmicky tricks with the chain but aren't super practical.
