Sometimes the answer is simple. Sometimes it is because she has a Doctorate, and changing your last name becomes a royal pain in the rear when you have one of those from what I understand. In the case of my wife and I, she wanted to keep the heritage of her last name, I wanted to keep the heritage of my last name, so we compromised. Rolled our old last names into our middles names and picked a new last name from scratch because the state where we live allows us to do that.
