8th Ed. Kroxigor mixed unit question

I am curious how the following scenario is supposed to work rule-wise.

A unit led by a Vampire Lord with Red Fury is in close combat with a Skink cohort with 3 Kroxigors making up the second rank.
The Vamp Lord is in base contact with skinks that are in base contact with 2 Kroxigors.
The Vamp Lord directs all attacks at the Kroxigors, and manages to deal 9 wounds.

Are all 3 Kroxigors removed or are 2 removed and 3 wounds are lost, or do the remaining 3 wounds go to skinks?

You remove all three kroxigors.
All attacks at any given int step always resolve simultaneously, and at the time when the vampire makes his attacks he can legally target the kroxigor through the skink HE is in b2b with, therefore all the attacks he directs against kroxigor must be resolved against kroxigor. For example if he managed to cause 11 wounds, he would kill all three kroxigor and the other two attacks would be wasted.
 
So a character can kill models it is not in base contact with?
I realize he can kill 9 skinks while being in contact with only 3, but that is covered by the step up rule.

Yes, that is the whole point of the 3rd paragraph of the spawn kin rule, if a model is in base to base with any skink that is in base contact with any Kroxigor then he can allocate amd resolve all his attacks on Kroxigor.
 
Which is why they are useless against the units they'd be most useful against.

I understand that, and it accounts for being able to attack 2 of the 3 kroxigors.
It is the Kroxigor the character is not in base contact with any of the skinks that are in base contact with the 3rd Kroxigor I am talking about.

The character can only target 2 of the kroxigors, and the step-up rule does not cover a model "sidestepping" to fill a gap, only moving forward.

It just seems odd to me to that a character can wound and kill a model it cannot possibly direct any of his attacks at.

So under your interpretation of the rules, if a hero charges a line of archers, he can only kill 6 (assuming 2 ranks)? What happens after that? Is he out of combat?
 
Being in contact with a skink that touches a krox allows you to attack krox.
"Casualties are always taken from the rearmost rank of the appropriate model type".

Yeah, he wacks all 3 kroxigor.

Thanks, with that cleared up, now the actual situation we had come up in a game........

The Vamp Lord does 7 wounds, removing 2 kroxigors and leaving 1 wound on the remaining kroxigor.
2nd round of combat, the Vamp Lord directs his attacks at the remaining Kroxigor, but wait! He is no longer in base contact with any skink that is in contact with the last Korxigor.

This led to 2 questions from my opponent :

1. Should the kroxigor that was not in base contact with any skink in base contact with the Lord be the first model removed?
2. Does that mean the Vamp Lord in essence had 1 round to try and kill that kroxigor before he could no longer wound it?

1. No I do not think you need to take that model first. As far as rules go I really think you can take any model from the rearmost rank of krox that you wish.

2. Yes I do believe that is correct.

I am in no way a rules expert or ETC player so take it with a grain of salt, but that is how I would go about it.

The rules for casualty removal in combat state that it is done the same way as casualties for missile fire. And in the missile fire rules, it says that casualties need to be removed equally from each end of the rank in question.

Applying that to the current situation, if you had 3 krox in the second rank of the unit and 2 are killed, the one in the middle would be the one left standing.

Thank you. That is what I was looking for. The rule which covers how to handle it.
