I didn't like that movie much (The first). It wasn't _that_ bad and it had some funny stuff in it, but overall... meh.
 
Why are people so obsessed with him?
He isn't even a particularly interesting character.
IMO his and Groot's main purpose is to sell toys and that's it.

Are you kidding me? He is such a funny character. Every time he is on screen it is pure gold.

It would appear that way. I'm not the only one who feels this way, the character has become wildly successful. He is just such a perfect member in the Guardians of the Galaxy crew. I knew nothing of Rocket prior to the movies but he has become my favourite character in the series.
 
Sure, people like him. But people also like Adam Sandler, Mickey Mouse, Borat, and that Tool Time guy. All of those are very successful, but in my eyes they are mostly bad.
Rocket beats all of those at least but that's not hard.

It might be a cultural thing (on top of being personally subjective). Who are the characters that you find to be extremely humorous?
 
Hmmm...
I rarely laugh about things in the media, but lately I got some good laughs out of Modern Family (not a specific character, all of them have some great jokes).
Mr. Ed (old black and white series with a talking horse) had great jokes. My Name is Earl had some ridiculously funny stuff in it (although that's normally not my style of humour)
The old guy from Gran Turino is great.
Jarvis in Agent Carter is funny.
And I laughed about Oscar (Sylvester Stallone version).
The Intouchables and Welcome to the Sticks made me laugh multiple times.

In general I prefer dry humour and/or intelligent humour.
Most of the time French and British (and to a lesser degree German) comedy is more funny to me than American comedy, although there is of course good and bad on both sides.

That's fair enough. I think humour can sometimes miss its mark across cultures.
