Blog Lava Lizardmen: Updated 13/10/2015

I used cork tiles 4 mm thick and tore off some pieces. I positioned them on the movement tray (that I ordered online) and just started cutting :P. I fixed the cork to the bases and tray with PVA glue and made sure there was plenty of it covering the surface. This gives the whole a smooth layer to paint on. The bubbles were made by making little GreenStuff balls of varying size and pusing them into the wet PVA. The PVA glue is thick enough to embed the bubble.

I will provide more WIP shots with the next units and bases so it becomes more clear.

The tray has been painted and I have started to attach the models to the bases:

I will provide pictures of the completed base + models tomorrow :P

Thanks for all the comments and feedback, it is greatly appreciated!

That is an awesome idea! I've never heard or seen this done before. Well done!

Those bases look really nice. That is a very inspiring unit!

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I am about halfway done with my Bastiladon base and I will put up a mini tutorial on how I did it, including what paints I used.

The next challenge will be figuring out a way to build a base for 30-40 Saurus Warriors that fits nicely and still looks like one whole. I was thinking of perhaps adding elevation to the back so it seems like they are coming down from a rocky/lavaish hill. Any suggestions?

Great work, regarding the Saurus 40 block, can you do 2 trays of 20 that link together, make one higher and place at the back you could even add a backdrop to this base

Yea I was thinking of making it a really Scenery like unit, but not entirely sure how I can make it plus I have to take TLoS in consideration. As for the unit size, I was thinking of making a 30 man, 5x6 unit that can be expanded or moved to a 4x 10 unit. I will finish my other bases first though :P

Yeah for me that would be like quantumphysics or something :)

Bastiladon base is nearly completed. I will have pics and tutorial posted by tomorrow! I've also started some work on the next movement tray, but no pics yet :P

Ok, base is done and Bastiladon is fixed to the base. Tutorial for the base is as follows:

First I scavenged myself a chariot base. I broke off some cork (4 mm thick) and placed them where I wanted.

Using PVA glue I glued the cork to the base and added small GS balls to mimic bubbles. I also added some cork to get some extra features in.

Next up I added some other clutter like some plastic skills and some spots of gravel (which I also glued with PVA glue) to get some more details in.

The base was then primed gray:

I applied the following to the primed base:
Wash with Nuln Oil
Drybrush with Codex Grey
Drybrush with Administratum Grey
Light drybrush with Ulthuan Gray
I added a couple of spots of Seraphim Sepia to break up the grey. Now we have a base that looks like this:

Next up is the lava:
Blazing Orange and then a layer of Troll Slayer Orange

Then I added a layer of Fire Dragon Bright

After that another layer of Yriel Yellow followed with a layer of Sunburst Yellow (thin) to brighten it

After that a final layer of about 50/50 Sunburst Yellow + Ceramic White, and finish the little details and voila, the base is done:

Here is the base with the model pinned to it. Sadly it is a fairly large model and the bubbles aren't really visible but yea can't really be helped.

I have to mention that my camera isn't that good and the light might be a bit bright. So what do you guys think? I do have a feeling that it still lacks a bit of details. Normally I would add some tuft or plants, but considering its hot lava I can't really do that now can I :P

Great painting on those lenses.:D

How about trying to add some steam from a few holes :)

I was thinking of adding some steam or smoke from craters and stuff like that using some of that plushy wooly stuff. My issue with that is that it might not be as durable as I would want it to be.

Could you make the craters seperate and magnetize and then just use them when you want to impress

The basing goes so well with your Bastiladon. This is truly inspired work. I can only imagine how awesome it will all look when your entire army is assembled and painted.

Cheers for all of the positive comments. I've finished another Skink Skirmisher tray and I am working on the base for the BSB. More to come soon!

Update time:

Second unit of Skink Skirmishers rebased!

I have also made a new base for my BSB:

Sorry for the generally bad lighting, this lamp is the only proper light source plus im using my phone camera.

I would have finished sooner, but I got side tracked with a new army. Managed to get a really good deal on a really big Empire army so I have been trying a paint scheme:

I dont really have the feeling that the metalwork on the Empire model is good enough. For now It is just a layer of Ironbreaker with a wash of Nuln Oil. I don't want the the armor to be glossy and all. Same goes for the swords. Base is very unfinished aswell, I plan on putting them on snow bases.

So what do you guys think?

Any C&C is greatly appreciated!
