Little Test of AP Speedpaint

just for Info and maybe it's interesting for some people.

I'm still trying to figure out how to paint a good yellow. So I gave the new speedpaint's a shot.

So I primed some skinks:
From left to right
Just Matt withe
Just demonic yellow
Just nerotic flesh

Army green/ zenithal necrotic flesh
Demonic yellow/ zenithal necrotic flesh
Demonic yellow/ zenithal Matt withe

First result same order

Detail primer withe and yellow

I think withe is brighter. But the difference is little

You see the difference. Personally I like the withe base better

Not much to see from the different colors. But I really dislike the left one.


Regarding the speedcolor use and the aim of it (making shades and highlight at the same time).

Use is easy, first you might think it's a red wash. It takes less paint than I expected per model (two drops for a skink is enough). I had to remove some paint after painting, it was pooling. It goes easily from the brush. It takes longer to dry. About the dry time of a wash.

Regarding the aim. Shades yes. For this color I can say the look like red wash were put on the model. Highlights... I don't see them.

Timewise, SPEEDpaint!, yes it was faster, because I didn't have to wait for the base coat to be dry to slap on the wash.

I will give all of them a second layer of the the same color. We will see what happens. Right now ... I'm not convinced to spend more money on speedpaint. I like the common way better.

All Right second look an the zenithal primed. At the army green primed there is a difference between upper and under.

And on the yellow with narcotic flesh you can see a slight difference

Ok second coat doesn't add much, but.... It looks quit well with the comic style I want to go for.

Dayum the comic style looks epic! I will have to give that a try one day myself.

I like the GW contrast paints, I think that I will probably start going to the Army painter Speed paints because these look amazing!

I have never worked with contrast paint. The price was always a no go. So I can't tell if they are better or not.

Next test will be: first blacklining than put on the speed paint. Base will be a withe primed mini

Result: although the ink was dry, the ink gets washed away by the speedpaint. I'm not sure if I like the result.

You could try a layer of varnish after the ink but before the speedpaint and see if that helps. A bit time consuming though.

I doubt that would work. There have been reports that speed paints are made with a resin medium base. I think what's happening here is that the ink and the speed paint mediums are interacting and causing runny paint.

The whole liquid resin as a medium is why I have shied away from these paints completely.
