I’ve been playing 40k for the last 9 months or so and while I’m no tactical wizard I’m at least a decent player. I’m just starting up fantasy and have had one game so far, which I naturally got tabled in by a veteran player. Now I ain’t crying over getting stomped on but it does make me want to learn. I feel that my loss was primarily due to poor generalship on my part.
As far as models go right now I have a battalion box, a steg, and another ~20 each of both saurus and skinks. While I don’t think my list was really the larger portion of my weakness I’ll include it here for completeness
Scar-vet – CO, MS, LA (with cold one riders)
Skink priest - lv 2 (with skirmishers)
18 Saurus w/ spears
2 x 10 skink scrimishers
5 CoR
1 stegedon
~1k points
I was smashed by High Elves-
Large block of spearmen (~20) with a noble
2 chariots
Line of bowmen (~10)
2 lv wizards (high magic and beasts)
Clearly I was completely out gunned in magic and need to add a dispel scroll (or two). I was also thinking of moving my scar vet over to the saurus block. Anyhow if you’d like to comment on the list I’d be happy to hear it. Terredons and/or sallies would be great but I just don’t have them yet.
My broad strategy in the game was to chase the archers with the CoR screen the saurus block with the skinks and bring the steg in for a flank charge after the saurus received the charge from the much more mobile high elves.
What actually happened was that the archers flee’d my CoR and ate them alive the following turns between magic and shooting (beast cowers is not my friend). The chariots smashed through the skinks without noticing they were there, and a joint charge of a chariot and the block of spearmen was enough to break my saurus. The poor steg never got into combat and the effectiveness of the great bow was minimal due to the low BS.
My opponent’s suggestions after the match was that the CoR would of done better going after the chariot (but the dang things had an 18” charge so I don’t know how I would of done that) and that I moved my saurus forward too early. But I had been advancing because I felt that I was going to be eaten by magic and archery otherwise.
My general questions after the game was whether it would have been better deploy my flankers on the same side, my CoR were off to one side and the steg was fairly central. And if using the skinks to simply keep the chariots busy was viable. I’d love any general advice or links you recommend I read, through I have read all of the tacticas in the tactics section of this forum already.
This game was a little rushed for time. I'll try and take notes so that I can write a real battle report for the next one.
Anyhow, thanks for your input.
