Model for a mounted old blood

Hi there!

I am currently using a mounted old blood in my games, and i have proxied him (with an old skink on cold one, lol) for like a year now. The main reason is that the GW mounted sauri models look... atrocious (oooh, fancy word there).

The cold ones we have now are so ugly, that i wont even mention them as an option. The best one seem to be the DE knights, but what to use for the actual hero? The guy on carnosaur is OK. no more no less, but he is pretty expensive, if you arent gonna use the carnosaur even. The cold one hero we have is the ugliest model in the game, with no real competition, and the plasic cold one riders arent beefy enough to be easily converted to a cool hero. I can do arm swaps and weapon swaps and such, but no real sculpting with green stuff, so i need a good basic model to work with.

Is there maybe another range than the GW miniatures that offers a decent alternative? Has any one come up with something decent, or do you just bend over and buy the GW mounted hero?

All ideas, and especially pictures are welcome

When I get home, I'll post a picture of my mounted Scar Vet. I converted him to ride a dark elf cold one. I think he looks ok.

Dark Elf cold ones are indeed the way to go. You can find some reall nice conversions into Saurus Cold One Riders. I agree that the latest Saurus heros look rather.. daft... I find it hard to convert a Saurus hero since they need to be bulkier than the average saurus. I shall think on this and let you know if I can find a good solution (a bit too wasted for clear thinking now).

Personally, I've never seen a DE Cold One-mounted Lizardmen conversion that I actually liked. I think in order to make the two separate models look good together, one must:

• remove all the Dark Elf bits (armor, leather straps, buckles, etc.
• incorporate some Lizardmen bits - swapping heads with the SCOR Champion's mount (and the kit comes with two anyways) would look cool

In addition, I just find the Dark Elf Cold Ones just look too weedy.

I've never understood any hate for the new coldones I think there great, I agree with above poster if you wanna convert the DE ones.

Thanks, but thats not quite what i was looking for. You have done a decent enough job with the parts easily accessable, but the problem is i do not like those parts

i agree that the DE ones are a bit weedy, and that some of the bits might need "improving", but i cant see why sauri couldnt use harness and stuff. i see the cold ones as being dificult to control even for a beefy saurus. its not like they have slann mind powers to control the beast with

in sweden we have a saying, that translates roughly to "personal taste is like an ass. its split by the middle" meaning we all like different things (it sounds a lot more sensible in swedish, i assure you).

I have never bought any of the Gamezone products but I'm a bit fan of the cold ones. Here's a picture and the link is below. Hope that helps finding a great model. The fact that GW hasn't gotten their own creature right is a bit troubling. Going from anorexic 5th ed, then to fat cow, then to extra stupid cow I really don't know where they will go from here! Maybe a blob or even a worm of some sort.

Personally I loved the models right before the current lizardmen old ones, the ones we shared with the DE. Look like little godzillas to me. Of course they are lacking in some detail as I think they were some of the first plastic minis GW came out with.

Still have about 8 of those. The Riders are simply the best ever, and the cold ones are pretty decent too (don't have that retarded look in their eyes).

Here's what I did for my own mounted Scar-Vet/Old Blood model.




I used a TG head, some Saurus Warriors bits (the shoulder pads and the skull hanging from the left one) and the spear from the Saurus Cold One Cavalry kit. You could easily take a weapon from the TG sprues and modify it to make it look real good. I wanted a simple sword to represent the Sword of Striking or the Burning Blade of Chotec.

thanks SeBM, but that isnt quite what i want either. the plastic sauri are a bit too skinny to look like S5 T5 W3 combat beasts in my book, but i have pretty much decided to "take it up the bum like a champion" and order a carnosaur and put him on a small base. he goes alone anyway, so it shouldnt be a problem that the carnosaur is big. Ill do a simple weapon switch to give him a nice two handed weapon, and that will be it. too bad avatars of war dont have a mounted model to complement this one (at the bottom):

If you plan on putting an old blood on carnosaur on a small base be aware of 2 things:

- It might lead to some confusion with your opponent.
- Even if it doesn't, with true line of sight, you end up with a very vulnerable model to shooting.

1) i play in a very tight gaming group. we always make sure to tell each other what each model represents.
2) in said gaming group we abolished TLoS and replaced it with a much simpler house rule

hmmm. i just got an idea...

what do you guys think about basing the character on a bloodcrusher? does any one know how they are in scale compared to sauri (no one in my group plays daemons, lol). i would have to swap the head and weapons, and possibly sculpt some armour, but that all sounds reasonable. wonder how much work it will take to get it to fit to something that looks like a cold one...

I have seen some bloodcrusher/saurus conversions before,
they look prety good, you might have to add some scales to his back to
have him match the rest of your army though.

Off topi: never thought I'd see lizardmen devoted to khorne, that's a pretty cool conversion.

Green-stuffing a normal cold one rider wouldn't be too hard. The torso and the arms are about all you would have to do. You might try an arm swap with the arms off of a kroxigor, but I don't know if those are seperate from the model or not, and you would have to lop some of them off to make them shorter, so prolly not a good idea to try that. I would make some, but I'm just not that good with green stuff yet( only thing I can make is beard and hair on my space wolves and dwarves). You might try and see if any of your local group would be willing to help you for trade, either conversion work or painting, lord knows you could give lessons on either of those.
