AoS My first thousand point game...

Tomorrow afternoon, I’ll play my first 1000 point game. As I mentioned in my introductory post, I’ve only played a few 500 point games so far, and been roundly thrashed in each of them. I think my problem has been a combination of poor unit selection, poor tactics, and a lack of insight into how my different units can interact with one another. Plus, I don’t own enough Skinks.

Anyway, here’s my first draft 1000 point army (it actually only comes to 980 points), with a short discussion on how I envision using it. Below my signature is a list of the 110 Seraphon Allegiance models I own, so if anybody gets ambitious they can say, “You worry me, son, you got it all wrong, see, whatcha wanna do is…” and etc.

So:

Ripperdactyls (3)—140 points
Slann Starmaster (1, leader, general)—260 points
Saurus Guard (10, battleline)—200 points
Saurus Guard (5, battleline)—100 points
Bastiladon (1, behemoth)—280 points

Total—980 points

Allegiance Abilities
Battle Traits: Masters of Order, Lords of Space and Time
Command Trait: Great Rememberer
Artefact: Incandescent Rectrices

Plan: While of course I’ll have to be reactive to my opponent’s army (which I know will be a Death army, probably with lots of skeletons) and tactics (which I suspect will involve a lot of charging), as well as what Battleplan we roll, in general I was thinking I’d set the Ripperdactyls loose to go after isolated targets, keep the smaller unit of Saurus Guards close to my Slann Starmaster in my territory, and then use Great Rememberer to (hopefully) bippety-boppety-boo the larger Guard unit and the Bastiladon around the battlefield controlling objectives and harassing my opponent’s army from the rear. My biggest worry is that my opponent will ignore my three offensive units and just run in and try to crush my general and his guard.

So that’s my plan!

Collection notes: I’ve only painted 10 Skinks, which was fun, but I did it too fast and I’m a much better painter now, I think (I’ve been practicing/getting experience on my 40K models). Everything else is just built and primed black (except as noted above). I think I need about 60 more Skinks and a Troglodon at the least before I start expanding other battlelines and doubling up on heroes. Oh, and a Skink Starseer.
 
Not the most competitive list but I think it can work. Try using magic, the Bastiladon and the Rippers to kill anything that can cause mortal wounds and many armies won't be able to kill those Guards.

The Slann is pretty expensive though for 1k, and the Guards are not optimal outside of their Starhost.

Against hordes of Skeletons Guard are pretty good though. Very defensive.

Hmmm I rarely build 1k lists but I cannot imagine many that could beat an Eternal Starhost at 1k if you have anything to snipe a hero or two.
 
Any idea what your opponent has?

Skeletons are slow but if you get in melee wipe out the unit don’t over stretch as they come back alive fast.
 
Yeah big units of Skeletons are scary. Concentrate on those.

As for what my opponent is likely to take, I suspect it’ll be more of the what he beat me with yesterday, only bigger and badder. His general was some kind of vampire lord, he had a bunch of skeletons, and then a pair of, I believe, Crypt Infernal Courtiers. His style was all about buffing, charging, and buffing charges.

Now, based on what y’all have said, how about this for a revised list?

Eternal Starhost—130
—> 1 Saurus Eternity Warden—140
—> 3 units of Saurus Guards (5 in each)—300
(Note that I only have 15 Saurus Guards so to meet minimums I’ll have to field units of 5.)

1 Skink Starpriest (general)—80

1 unit of Chamelon Skinks (5)—120
1 Razordon—40
1 unit of Skink Handlers (3)—40

Total—990 points

Artefact—Prism of Amyntok

I use the Ripperdactyl riders, the Chameleon Skinks, and the Razordon to “snipe” enemy heroes, and the Saurus Guards against enemy battlelines? The Starpriest teleports around sniping as well, with the Prism? How does that sound?

Some notes and suggestions.

Having a starhost, you will have 2 artefacts.
Don't pick the handlers. It's 40 pts that will just let reroll 1s to your single razordon. On average, you are spending 40 pts for a single reroll each turn... so I'd say to use your razor alone, and use those 40 pts for the salamander. (as a side note, razors shine if more than 1)
 
I agree.
Handlers are very useful for Salamanders but not as great for Razordons.
That's even more true if your army contains an Astrolith Bearer for example, because that one lets you reroll _all_ hits and not just the ones. I often omit the handlers as well as those points are well spent for other stuff (like another Razordon! :D )
 
Thank you both! Unfortunately my models are already packed and in the car, so I can’t change out the Handlers for today’s game, but I’ll certainly try that next time around. Especially thanks for the note on the extra Artefact, Killer Angel, I hadn’t noticed that rule. I’ll add the Blade of Realities to the Eternity Warden, increasing the rend on his mace to –2.

I feel a lot better about this game than I did before I posted here, that’s for sure. I hope I can at least be competitive. My plan is to try to take out his skeletons first!

Remember kill the full unit if possible but I warn you they can be hard to kill with the death save.

Thanks, I’ll do my best. I’m thinking about putting the Ripperdactyl toad in the middle of the battlefield and marching all my Saurus Guards out there to tempt the skeletons out and then trying to unload everything I’ve got on them in one round. Not likely to work out, though.

Oh! That reminds me! When I built my last ten Saurus Guards last night, I built one of them with the drums and one of them with the banner deal. Are those two models considered to be armed with Celestite Polearms as well or do they only have their jaws attacks?
 
Well, heh, THAT didn't go as well as I'd hoped. But I had fun, and I learned a lot. One thing I learned was not to charge up the middle in the opening round with Ripperdactyls, even if you do get the benefit of Toad Rage. Another thing I learned was that Vampire Lords on Zombie Dragons are pretty potent. I DID manage to wipe out his skeletons. I may type up a complete battle report for that forum later tonight, just for grins. I totally could have used another Razordon instead of those Skink Handlers!
 
Yeah a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon is pretty good. Both his spell and his healing abilities are tough. I use one myself in my Undead army.
I somehow missed that you mentioned your opponent having one, I thought it was a Vampire on foot which isn't quite as dangerous.

Yeah, it was a vampire on foot in our previous game, which was only 500 points. He seems to like his Skeleton Warriors and his Morghast Harbingers a lot. Everything else is negotiable. He's got this big cardboard box of models that he just kind of paws through, pulling out stuff until he has the right points value. And here's me with my branded GW battle boxes of carefully preselected and packed models looking on thinking "Be careful!"

Anyway, my battle report is up!

You sound like me, everything packed away neatly and your opponents come with an old biscuit tin and reglue models as they put them on the table top!
