Oh, and before I forget it: There are some nice websites and videos on youtube that show you the techniques.
    Examples:
    http://www.how-to-paint-miniatures.com/

And don't worry if you look back in a while and think "OMG my first models are SO bad". Everybody has to start somewhere.
With a little bit of practice you will have decent quality in no time. :)

Lol! I still have my first model I ever painted (a 6th edition Orc Boy with additional hand weapon). It was SO BAD! Looks like a 3-year-old painted it! I keep it around just to remind me how far I've come with my painting. (I call him the unit mascot!)

Oh and do you think I could finish Lord Kroak using the paints I have now? And if so then how should I proceed? I will use that light brown to dry brush the wraps and bones some then I will paint over some things to smooth it up. But aside from that what should I do

Sure. It is a journey. :)
The advantage you have in this day and age is that you can look up Youtube and other sites on the Internet to learn the techniques. Back in the day you had to be lucky and have a good painter in your city, or learn from the White Dwarf magazine or something.

Hehehe knew if I posted first others would get on it ;P

As I said ‘we’ will get you to be a better artist :)

I guarantee if you do as above you will notice a massive difference in your painting - you will be proud and will only get better from there.

Two key painting skills that work magic for very low effort are drybrushing and the use of inks/shades - it’s crazy easy to do and pops out seriously good results.

Practise on a model you don’t mind being a test subject for and go from there.

    Ok let's slow down abit.

    First

Primer, this is more important to get right than you think, it creates a bond for your paint to key too and also enhances details.

Use a good quality acrylic primer, preferably a car paint rattle can or such.

    Base coat

Apply thin coats rather than one thick coat.

I'm going to stop there as that is enough to be getting done right.

My first model was a Lizardman, all green with a yellow helmet but after around 12 months I was able to paint like this (these are mine) still very basic with no shading etc.

Nice anyone know if my rustoleum paint plus primer will work? Is that not a good one to use? Could I get by using it for now? Or should I get a different primer asap

I think it can work with many sorts of colors.
Just make sure to carefully build up the layers so you don't clog details.

Looking better! I'd suggest cleaning up the horns coming off of the palanquin. You shouldn't be able to see the black undercoat. It is visible in certain spots and also shows through from underneath some of the paint. Some more thin layers should improve that.
