New GW paints

I think that was proberbly a missinterprtation. The new red painting stations are limited edition and will revert back to grey afterwards
 
I agree, they would be nuts to stop selling the new paint. If they do, I have no problem with it as I will switch to another brand (vallejo probably) or mix my own from acrylic paint and thin it down.
 
Does anyone know where to get coloured metallics that'll mix with the regular acrylics that GW use these days? I mostly have used GW paints in the past so I'm not really sure what other brands are available (it wasn't until recently stores opened nearby that sold anything beyond GW paints). I want a blue metallic and a purple metallic, GW used to make coloured metallics, but they haven't for years and I think all my old ones have dried out now. Looked at Vallejo and they also seem to only have browns/golds/silvers. I know Testors used to make some coloured metallics, though they won't mix with GW paints.
 
I am not sure. You could try a art supply store and look at some of the acrylics that they have. Nowadays, most of them have a huge selection of paints with a lot of metalic colors in those ranges. They will need a lot of thining though. You could use s flow medium to thin them out.

When it comes to models, atleast lizardmen, GW is the front runner. I love their models and with the only near competition being Mantic they can, atleast for now, charge whatever they want because the quality of the sculps and the variety of their kits are so good. However even in models they need to be careful, if I was doing an OnG army now I'd definetly flesh my Orc unit's out with some Mantic and I would use ALOT of Mantic if I was doing VC. As I said they can somewhat afford to do this with models because their models are, in my opinion, the best.

HOWEVER...their paints are not. Their paints are second best to Vallejo if I'm being generous and my major concern with this price "fix" is that it will discourage younger players from painting. When it's becoming increasingly expensive to paint your models because they increase the cost of paint, I think we risk seeing more and more Grey armies. I'd never thought I would activitly discourage people from buying from GW but with paints I honestly would encourage people to go else where and get better for cheaper.
 
For me, it is more about quantity for the price. I also think it makes more sense to have dropper bottle that you can control the flow from than a pot that could (and would) dry out faster because it is used while open.
 
I still have my old GW paints from the 90s when they were in the Hexagon bottles, they are brilliant. The current one's they use (not the band new ones havn't used them) are just wasteful. That said I do think that GW metalics are the best out there.

I'm not sure if I understood your problem correctly, but I have at least made coloured metallics by mixing GW colours. Like for dark metallics with a small sheen of blue, I mix just a bit of Enchanted Blue into Tin Bitz. I haven't tried this with other metallics, like Chainmail or Mithril Silver, though.

What I was looking for was bright coloured metallics, the sort you see on cars on the road. It was a bit off topic, but all this talk about new paints reminded me that I wanted to do a blue and purple metallic coloured Necron army but never did because I couldn't find paint to do it. GW used to make coloured metallics, like Polished Blue...

But they haven't for years, I used to have a pot of Polished Blue but its either dried up or lost, I don't remember. Though after some googling it seems Testors makes Acrylic metallics in a wide range of colours, I didn't know that, only ever bought enamels from them back when I used to paint model aircraft, might try and get my hands on some of them.
 
In Tomb Kings forum there was this guy who also wanted to paint his Necrons with metallic purple, and I advised him to mix a bit of Liche Purple with Tin Bitz. He liked the results and posted some pics how they turned out:

That looks kinda cool, but I was wanting something a bit more striking. I think I've found what I want in the Testors range (given they make paints for model cars, and these are the sorts of colours you often see on cars), just need to find where I can buy them from nearby so I can have a look at them in person.

Then either a non-metallic pink or bone coloured head for some contrast, and probably repaint the gauss rods something else as well (not sure what, probably purple).
 
Those look promising, they seem to only ship to US, though. I think, if you are going for the purple on those gauss rods, a lighter purple would look good. Not totally pink, but like it contains some purple energy. Good luck with the paints and please post pictures if you finish them!
 
Yeah, a Necron army is still a while off for me, its just the new paints reminded me I wanted to do them but couldn't find the right paints ;) Have to finish off my Tyranids first and I just bought a bunch of new Space Wolves before I think about Necrons.
 
Gah, two disappointments today. I went to 3 separate hobby shops and they're all sold out of devlan mud :( Also not one of them had acrylic colored metallics like I wanted. One shop had a purplish blue made by humbrol, but no pure blue, red or striking purples. :(
 
Crap thats the first time I realised that there is no more devlan mud being made by GW! Wonder how the shades compare... Or maybe I should just look for shades in a different range as I have been doing anyway.
 
Yeah I honestly didn't think they'd sell out THAT fast. I spoke to the guy behind the counters of the 2 non-GW hobby stores I went to and they said that as soon as the announcement for the new paints came out a bunch of people came in and just bought them in bulk and they were gone almost instantly. Damn that's frustrating, its the base wash I use for both my Tyranids and my Orcs and Goblins. Granted I have a pot and a half of it left still, but it goes down FAST when you're washing entire models with it.

According to the people I've spoken to, the new shades don't have anything that matches Devlan Mud, which is gonna drive me crazy. I'm sure I can find something else or mix something up with browns and blacks that'll be good enough for future armies, but my poor Tyranids are going to be 2 toned coz there's no way I'll be able to perfectly (or even satisfactorily) match a wash colour like that.
 
In the Paint Conversion Chart it does list a shade that is meant to match devlan mud. No idea how close it is though...

Devlan mud was extremely popular; basically everyone used it. It is quite arrogant of GW to pull it and replace it with something different and just expect everyone to adapt to that rather than looking for a wash from another company... Thats the way they work these days though I guess. F*ck the customer.
 
I saw on another forum that the move wasn't a voluntary move, but had to do with some copyrighting issues with the company that manufactured the paints for GW. That is why there is a complete name change across the board. I do not know any of the details though.

That would explain the name changes.
 
Yeah the name change reasoning was mentioned a couple of pages back. Thats ok. They could have renamed devlan mud to something else and kept the same formula though rather than changing to a shade. However, I haven't tried the new ones myself so I honestly have no idea how close or far from washes they are, I'm just going off of what AllSeeingSkink said about them being different.
 
just to be pedantic the name change cannot be due to copy right as under IP laws you cannot copy right a paint name.

In my view it would be most lily because of the change in supplier that they cannot get a gaurentteed colour match so as such would be PR suicide to try and pass off similar colours under the same name.

Imagine your midway though an army and the hugh of your colour changes!

makes sence to do a re-brand which also puts other comapnies who have used similar naming conventions on the back foot in regards to new customers
