8th Ed. Once in combat, HW -> Spear?

Hello everyone!

Sorry if this has been asked before.. but this has been bugging me and I'd really like to know for my game on Sunday so I can decide on Saurus block vs. TG.

Lets say I upgraded my block of saurus to have spears. I decide to use HW+S on the charge/being charged for the added survivability (for whatever reason).

Next round of combat, can I switch to spears so my 2nd rank can get a poke in? Or am I stuck with HW + S because I chose that at the start of combat?

It doesn't make sense to me why my 2nd rank couldn't pick up their spears (at least) while the front rank hold off the assault.

Technically I'm playing 7th ed rules (majority of my group aren't fans of 8th), but any definite rule will suffice!

in 7th you are stuck with whatever you chose in the first round....

In 8th you don't get a choice...

I guess I'll try the spears and hope enough survive a charge to attack back in numbers.

Spears are definitively worth it in 7th.
