Personal Messages Question

I've recently replied to a few direct/personal messages sent to me by some forum members and the messages show in my outbox, but not in my sent items.

Is this normal? Have I missed something?

I know this sounds really stupid but I want to make sure the people I'm replying to are getting my messages.

I believe that it stays in the outbox until they read it.
