Don't know. I have known some very friendly and affectionate cats and I have known asshole dogs.

But on average? Sure, dogs are probably more affectionate. But then... it is hard to tell for me dogs are affectionate or just sycophantic.

Like most things, there are exceptions. However, in 90%+ of the cases, the rule will hold.

A simple truth.

My in-laws have a really friendly cat (I love that stupid cat). This cat will greet us at the door and cries when she is left alone. If evernyone moves into another room, the cat will follow. However, when my sister got a dog, we reconfirmed that there simply is no comparison. That dog is a billion times more friendly and affectionate.

They also lack one of my favourite part of cats, the soft fur. Instead they have that (kinda oily btw.) skin.

I have a friend with such a cat.
he's sorta creepy, and the feeling when you touch his skin is… slightly unconfortable.
But it's one of the most friendly cat I've ever met.

Bit random, but an author called Robert Crais does a really good depiction of the psyche of a German Shepherd dog in the crime novel "The Promise"

It's a great read otherwise, but I felt he did a great job (without it coming across as cheesy) of depicting the identity of the dog.

One of my mother's coworkers back when I was in High School had a cat named "DC." DC stood for "Damned Cat." Don't get me wrong, DC was in a loving home and was adored by that coworker, but also had a habit of stealing her beer. By sticking her paw in it and drinking the liquid off of her own paw. Now think about that for a moment. Think about where that paw has been. DC's owner, when my mother mentioned this to her, went "oh holy f**k, I didn't realize that!" Mother looked at her with one of those knowing faces and sighed. "You drank the beer anyway, didn't you?" "Yep." "Well, you better hope the alcohol killed anything bad from kitty's paws then..."
