I've probably been a forum member long enough now to throw my hat into the mix. This will probably be the paint blog with the slowest progress, but I'll bank on the fact that slow progress is better than no progress!

It all starts with my Christmas presents.




I've begun work on them, nothing fancy; cutting from the sprue, mold line removal and assembly. Will post progress pictures as soon as a snap a photo.

Assembly (and mold line removal, which is the most time consuming step) progress. Half the team is ready and I'm part way through my first of two pump wagons.

I've now cut from sprue, assembled and cleaned mold lines off of the entire team. I haven't glued on the right arm of the troll on because I'm worried that with its positioning so close to the troll's face it will be difficult to paint. I'm thinking I'm going to paint it separately and assemble afterwards. Not sure if that's a good idea; we'll call it a learning experience.

Best of all the two pump wagons are assembled (sans crew, who will be painted separately). As @Bowser forewarned, they were a nightmare to put together. So many fiddly little bits that all have to line up properly together. Thank goodness they are both done!

Next steps will be to finish preparing Ripper Bolgrot, coming up with a paint scheme and a basing scheme.

Not bad idea, just scrape paint from connection point for better adhesion of glue and you can always dip a little wash to shoulder connection after glue hardens and it'll look like you painted it in one piece.

A question for @ChapterAquila92 , @Bowser , @WildColonial Boy , @Warden and anybody else knowledgeable with Blood Bowl .

The Pump Wagons for my Snotlings team come with 32mm bases. They barely fit on these bases with the "wheels" just hanging on to the edge of the base. I took a quick look at some of the various bases supplied with blood models and found that the largest one used is 40mm (for certain Star Players and Bull Centaurs, etc.). A square on a blood bowl pitch measures 34mmx34mm. So the 40mm base will hang slightly outside of the square, but since many of the other bases used are smaller, it tends to work.

So my question is, would it be okay to base my Pump Wagons on 40mm bases seeing as the model itself overhangs the base anyways?

Here are the pump wagons positioned on their standard 32mm base (left) and the larger 40mm base (right)







As you can see, the model is larger than either base, and this is before the snotlings are glued on, who protrude out on either side making the model even bigger. I can't see the larger base causing a problem (or even being noticed), but I thought I'd check with you guys first.

Big Guys are often better served on 40mm bases in Blood Bowl than on 32mm for that reason, and pumpwagons are something of a Big Guy in their own right.

Introducing a freshly cleaned and assembled Ripper Bolgrot. The thinking man's troll! What a great little model. Love his silly cap and spectacles

I've been tinkering with the idea of how to base my Snotlings. The obvious way would be a traditional dirt and grass base. Something you'd expect to see on a standard Blood Bowl pitch. Then I have two more out there ideas, for which I made some prototype bases.

1. Swamp/bog - this feels very much in line with Snotlings. It's gross and fowl. The base pictured below would be further accented by some grass tufts and mushrooms (a traditional Snotling thing). The mushrooms especially would give it a bit of pop as it could contrast against the very earthy tones used on the base. I didn't model these on the test base as I didn't want to waste resources, but the idea would be to further spruce up the swamp base once it comes to my actual models. This was more of a trail run for colorization of the swampy water. The actual swamp bases would feature more "land" and a bit less swamp, but here I added extra swamp just to experiment with the colors.
2. Beach - this is anything but conventional. The idea here is that my Snotlings, continually losing in Blood Bowl, were eliminated from a major tournament but stole the prize money while the other teams were engaged in games. Being sick of the swamp they moved off to play Blood Bowl in a much more comfortable environment, the beach. In this case, the base would be pretty much as pictured below in my prototype. There isn't much real estate on the small bases to add anything of significance (small palms, etc). Tiny seashells could work, but only if I found some plastic ones that are the right scale.

Two very very different looks. My wife likes the swamp base, but I'm not too sure between either of these (or even the regular grass/dirt) bases.

Classic paralysis by analysis.

First of all, they both look amazing, no question about that.
If I had to choose, I would pick a bog. With some tufts it will look like pitch after rainstorm.

I go with @JTSleep on this one and would go for the swamp one.
But those Beach bases would look amazing on a Lizardmen army

Well well... you've finally been pitched into Blood Bowl, and now you can walk the walk (or should that be boot the ball?) after talking the Blood Bowl talk for a good while now

A nice haul, though I'm surprised your nearest and dearest didn't gift you with the Lizardmen team, given you remain a staunch Servant of the Old Ones... but Bretonnians, Tomb Kings and Snotties are certainly worthy teams to play too.

To be honest, I'd save the swamp for Lizardmen if you ever pick their team up. The beach base would be a wildly entertaining aesthetic for your Snotlings, especially with their clothing looking pretty minimal at times, suggesting that they're dressed for it. The sand technique can also be used for your Tomb Kings, too!

One could argue that the Lizardmen outfit is swimming shorts at minimum.

Disagreement in the ranks, hmmm... that gives me much to contemplate!

The more I looked at the Lizardmen team, the less I liked them from a model perspective. I like The Old World Lizardmen and I like the Age of Sigmar Seraphon line even more, but the blood bowl ones look a bit odd. So I've decided to save the Lizardmen for a potential WHFB/TOW/AoS army should I feel the need to play a larger game than Blood Bowl in the future. The Old Ones will be served! (just not on the Blood Bowl pitch).

The Snotlings are currently my favorite and I'm intrigued to give the Tomb Kings a try. I'm still undecided, but I may trade away the Bretonnians in the future. Maybe for Gnomes, Chaos Dwarfs or Amazons... or something entirely new that Games Workshop might release between now and then.

One of the things holding me back from the beach bases is that they might look too similar to bases for my Tomb Kings. I might be able to differentiate them, but it could be tricky. At the very least the ocean surf is a pretty big difference.

What about seashells ? There are some sets on etsy, greenstuffworld sells them and stls are also available if you can get them 3d printed.
It would add another element to differentiate them from tomb kings.
