8th Ed. question 8ed heros/lords in units

ok lets say i have a unit that looks like this (O-oldblood V-veteran S- saurus C-champion):

SVOVC
SSSSS
SSSSS
SSSSS

and i want to put slann in that unit, becouse the first line is ocupied can i put slann in the second rank?

I am pretty sure it states that characters must be in the first rank, so you would have to extend the front rank for the slann.

actualy under the new rules,
since he's a different base size,
and not in temple guard...
you put him on either side of the unit.

oops never ming you can put him in,
since his base is as big as 2 saurus bases,
but if you put him in a skink unit the other
rule would apply....
