Discussion Question about seraphon music or lizardmen music.

So i started looking into this and this is page 1 of my thoughts. More of these to come and at the end i'll probably create a few tracks. But lets dip our toes into the mess :) (i never run spell check and i'm a typo king)

I think these have elements that would be close to a Lizardmen musical composition, but there are alot of elements that their anatomy wouldnt allow. Like any type of flute music, or vocal arrangements. The percussion and chinking rattles are close to spot on though. As time permits throughout the next few weeks im going to be composing to the best of my abilities something i think that you would hear from a lizarmen city based on their physical, mental and cognitive abilites. An orchestrated translation isnt something im after here, we already have james horner for that lol.

@Tuxedokman you bring up some fantastic points that I neve considered before. It is unlikely that the Lizardmen could (in the real world) use anything resembling a blowpipe or a flute, simply because of their anatomy. They very well would probably be restricted to drums or gutteral cries/screams. Maybe even a xylophone type of instrument? Or a pipe organ?

Has anyone ever made a mock example of what type of music they would play? I like to get into character when i play and model. But never really thought about what would the seraphon or lizardmen music would sound like.

Anatomical issues aside, my favorite music to play in reference to the Lizardmen is from the old Pitfall: Mayan Adventure game. Here is an example:

Link to the thread where I posted more info on this game. Its pretty old at this point... so many memories!

I hate to plug someone that doesn't pay me, my search for long playlists of instrumental music to have on head phones at work has lead me to Derek and Brand Fiechtner.

Their bread and butter is "One hour of ______ music". My favorite is one hour of Dwarf music. What sets the Dwarf music apart is the percussion that sounds like hammers falling on anvils. I think we need to figure out something like to accentuate hypothetical Lizardmen music.

Here's an hour of jungle and trbial music

Here's an hour of dinosaur and prehistoric music

Maybe mix and match these two for Lizardmen music. They have a good single on the Aztec Empire and Mayan Empire respectively in this playlist of ancient civilizations. Their pieces tend to be on the light and relaxing side, which is fine, Lizardmen are not always on a tear like the Orcs and Goblins, but I would like to see a dash of this epic playlist to have a bit of battle music, or beloved protagonists dying in battle music.

*Stumbles in late*

Whilst the lizzies as mortals would to my mind stick to more drums, pipes, and tribal music, I find myself more agreeing with @ravagekitteh. Even before becoming literal starlight, the lizzies were very much star orientated. Thusly, i'd see their true music being the song of the stars, whether harnessed or only heard by the Starpriests and Slann (in the Warhammer-verse) or the literal song of the starlight of the Seraphon. Of course the actual sound of the universe is well beyond our mortal conception...

Here's another good one, if not for the Seraphon then for The Mortal Realms in general:

Here's a slightly different one for Lizardmen I found, from a PC game that's close to my heart - Dragonshard! Anyone else heard of it? No? Well, it has Lizardfolk in it so you're all missing a great game!

There are some excellent ambient themes in it but I could only find the battle themes. Anyway, enjoy!

And here's one that would be a good Bretonnian theme for the likes of @Warden :

Hmm, i think this fits quite nicely in my opinion.

In Starbound, this music piece was made for the Hylotl. A race of fish people that partly takes inspiration from Japanese culture.

Can I say, as a latecomer, this is one of my favorite threads on the forum? Lots of great music, fluff and insight! I’m actually a bit musically inclined so I do have a few thoughts, forgive the wall of text that is to follow.

I completely agree anything in the woodwind family is a non-starter and that percussion is going to be central, but I’m definitely on the side of mysterious ethereal music rather than something bestial or aggressive. These beings are stargazers, and they literally (or metaphorically depending on which edition we are talking about) live with their heads in the clouds. I also think most melodies would sound very alien or offputting to mamalian ears, so the eerier the better. Also after doing some light googling it seems like reptiles tend to hear low frequency vibrations better than high frequencies, so that’s worth bearing in mind.

I would actually say there is a tendency in this thread to suggest instruments of simple design, and I feel this need not be the case. Yes the miniatures tend to show drums, which are simple in construction, but they also show intricately engineered weapons of war. Europeans used drums and pipes on the battlefield because they were easy to use while marching, it didn’t mean the pipe organ didn’t exist if you catch my drift. I feel confident in saying seraphon could construct complex musical devices if they were so inclined.

I had two ideas about possible melodic instruments to use. The first would be plucked instruments, such as a harp. Harp players specifically keep their nails long in order to better pluck the strings. It stands to reason that a race with sharp nails might gravitate towards making instruments where that was an asset.

The other one i would like to highlight is the waterphone. It is an obscure instrument, but its sound is both otherworldly and crystalline which are both words I feel applicable to the seraphon. The longer strokes especially almost remind me of a snake hissing, which also seems appropriate. You could likely emulate the sound to an extent doing cymbal washes if you didn’t want to rush out and buy a waterphone for some crazy reason.

Lastly, and speaking of hissing, I think vocals could be used but in a different context. I would use vocals like a rhythm instrument like a maraca. Pulsating hissing, probably in a large group like a choir, acting as another layer of percussion.

Minus the guitar, i think this would fit perfectly for the Lizardmen if they were based off of the Great Plains Indians

I can actually see them as being Lizardmen themes now. I'm imagining it, I'm imagining it...

Like twins! (But one twin diets and exercises and the other does not)

Lets go fight some Tyranids I guess.

i suspect they'd mainly use Drums in many variations, minor woodwind instruments (probably very Bass or even infrasound, since reptiles are more geared for that audio range), and lots of grunting, chanting, etc.

sorta like this:

Thought I'd necromance this thread with some Lizardfolk music from a D&D-based PC game I often play, that I've uploaded myself:
