question about the battle table thing

that giant 200+ dollar monstrosity that GW sells so you can have a semi modular gaming table.


I notice in pictures in the rule books that there are tons of skull pits....cause yknow those are frequent occurances on any stretch of land.

are tehy optional as in can you make it so they aren't there or is that just how it comes?
