Blog Qupakoco's Cohorts (Updated 1/29/2013)

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

I pulled my carno off his base, so there has been retro progress on him. I have another carnie that was supplied without a tail, so that'll be another project at some point.

As for basing, I honestly haven't really tried too much. The stuff that's on there now is just a textured spray paint. I only used it so I wouldn't lose appearance points in a tournament for having empty bases. (A tournament that was canceled, if anyone remembers that) I would definitely like to make some sweeter bases though. I don't really have an excuse since I have the stuff to do it.

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

No painting in this update. A lot of the other plog's have motivated me to get this done. I have been dreading working on my Ancient Steg because of the whole, "which configuration do I choose?" debacle. But thanks to some of my fellow lizards, I overcame my fear and got cracking last night.

I used a total of 7 magnets, 1/8" in diameter, and my handy drill with a 1/8" bit. I went ahead and glued all the sub-pieces together first, then starting drilling and cutting until I had the following results! It was pretty easy. For anyone on the fence about gluing their Steggy, I highly recommend looking into this. The only feature I haven't incorporated is the giant bow, though I think with a couple more holes and magnets it wouldn't be very hard to add. I am planning on using one more magnet for a replacement Skink for when the Ancient Steg is not a character mount.

Enjoy! (my magnets came in packs of 4)

And just for fun:

For my Skink Chief I glued one of the old school Saurus shields onto his feet and set the magnet in the shield. My only concerns now are to hide the magnets that hold the blowpipes. I am thinking that I can make some sort of feathery decoration with some of my spare standards to cover them up when they aren't in use.

Just as a word of caution; make sure you know the positive and negative sides of the magnets before you glue them in place, since the sides aren't marked. Otherwise your magnets could give you the opposite effect and not hold anything together!

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Great post, thanks! I'm facing the same issue right now and about to go looking for magnets on eBay...

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

I got mine at the hobby store. They had a huge box of them to pick from. I also haven't gotten that much glue on my fingers for a long time. It brought back some memories of when I was just starting with Warhammer.

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

A word of caution from someone who's played the magnetised stegadon game: neodymium magnet against neodymium magnet is a very strong pull. Paint chips very easily, and often the pull will weaken the glue to the point of coming apart. For me, these 2 things made the blowpipes a bit of a pain. You might think about using another variety of magnet on one of the two for the blowpipe/howdah connection, like a fridge magnet. Just a thought.

Anyway, very cool solution for sticking a magnet to the chief :D

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Looking good Qupakoco ,
I wouldn't wory about the blowpipe magnets,
after thet are painted no one even sees them.

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Just ordered 50 Neodymium disc 1/8 inch X 1/16" rare earth magnets (3mm x 1.5mm) for a whopping $4.95 on eBay! With free shipping! Oh the humanity! :D

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

50 magnets for $5? Dang. I only have 16!! And they were $5!!

Thanks for the tips, guys. I admit that I cringe a little when I pull the blowpipes off. And n810, your plog was my main inspiration.

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Small update: I finally finished up the unit of Skinks that my avatar goes with. I repainted that little guy a bit also. And I finally used some sand for the bases this time! Baby steps...

Also pictured is my WIP Slann and a WIP halberd-wielding Scar-Vet. They'll be done soon.

Can anyone correctly identify the creature in the background behind my Slann, above the spare Steg head?

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

CARNOSAUR!!!

20121126_220525.jpg

Thanks for the tips, everyone. The cork really gives that broken ground effect and makes the rock look a lot better. I'm up in there air about flocking between his toes for the mossy effect to hide the metal. The drybrush hides it fairly well. Still something I'm thinking on.

Personally I do not like the Kroq-Gar model that comes with the Carnosaur. I'll be converting my own rider in the future. Until then I'll probably leave this model on my shelf until a SoM battle comes up.

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Carnosaur is immaculate.

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

He looks good, but the photo makes it a little hard to see. Have you tried fiddling with the colour levels in your image editor? It can make it look more as it does in person. Here's an example, which I've probably dragged the brightness up way to high on:

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Wow, that looks much better. I didn't even think about doing that.

Thanks guys! I'll be slowly re-basing my whole army to the standard set by my Carnosaur. Should look good.

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts (Updated 12/13/12)

Hands down, this is my favorite Kroxigor model. He's from the Blood Bowl line, so I don't think he's very common.

Breton soup, anyone? He'll be making it all day. Forever actually.

Thanks for the tips on photo editing. It helps a bunch.

I'd like to make the blood a bit more glossy. Anyone got tips for that?

Re: Qupakoco's Cohorts

Thanks for the info and the link, Ol' Mosseh. I dug around and found something similar at my local store. Haven't tried it yet but I will soon enough.

UPDATES!!

Due to...ahem...peer pressure, I re-based a lot of my models to match that of my Carnosaur and Krox. For some reason my camera seems to create a haze around the edges of every picture, though with some photo-editing it seems to have mostly cleared up. I'm assuming the lens needs a good cleaning. Anyway, my apologies for the haziness of some of the images.

20130129_210145.jpg

Oh no... he sees us!!! RUN!!
20130129_210510.jpg

Unfortunately my kitbash Scar-Vet (who is staring at the camera) was finally killed in action. A Skaven Warpfire Thrower misfired and scattered right into his flank. A sad day for Lustria.

Next up is those Skinks I posted last time. They too got the re-base treatment.

I actually messed up on this little guys eye but the mistake makes him look like he's snarling. I've tried to reproduce the results, but can't seem to get it just right. Funny how that works out sometimes.

20130129_211040.jpg

I also re-based my Salamander Hunting Pack. Not really anything else was done to them, but in taking the pictures I see a few more spots to correct.

20130129_211421.jpg

20130129_211448.jpg

Notice the "scorched-earth" effect at the back corner of this ones base.

20130129_211520.jpg

"How about some new models?" Oh, ok. here are my Chameleon Skinks accompanied by Oxyotl. I went for a brown color as to blend them in with their brownish bases.

20130129_211658.jpg

Last but not least, here is my Slann progress. I decided that I really didn't want to separate the original model from his almighty Temple Guard for nostalgic reasons. But I did decide that since the Temple Guard which carry him are no longer fighters, they should instead be equipped with shields. He's not quite done yet, having his base just started and a few cover-ups that need to be done, but the overall presence is achieved.

This fat toad barely lines up with his Temple Guard unit, who are also almost done.

What's next? Well all those Saurus are in process of being re-based as well. 52 models take a little more patience to complete than just 10, so the going is slow. After that it's my Terradons since I'm sick of them not being painted or actually "flying."

Thanks for reading! Comments and criticism are still welcome.

Whoa, you have been productive! I really like the bases and adding the burn damage on the base of the Salamander was really clever. Also the snarling Skink is adorable!

Adorable!? Haha. The little buggers are pretty cute, but I was thinking fierce. Thanks for the feedback!

Those are some good looking cold ones you got there. :smug:
