7th Ed. Removing Casualties from Skirmishing units

Can anyone tell me where it is addressed in the rules. I can't find anything and have always played that you can remove any ones you want as long as the unit stays in their 1 inch formation.

Skirmishers rank up when in combat, just they do not get a bonus. You take from the back as always.

I think his issue might be with the shooting phase, not the CC phase. And casualties should indeed be removed from anywhere in the formation provided they maintain their 1" distances.
