    That army is looking amazing, really like the lava bases though :eek::eek:

    Amazing idea for the Mage-Priest, looks incredible.

    thanks i might post in a few weeks because my crush rejected me so you guys probably wont see me for a while and also thanks for the advice BAE and also thank you for the kind words Bowser
    I'm going to post a picture of a few of my units and then im going to be starting on my new army, Necrons so ill be a while.

    After all of the grief I went through to paint the Ankylodon, I've now dropped him from my list! He's just too useless to justify so a few big changes to the list and he's been replaced by a Greater Fire Elemental and a horde of Fire Elementals.

    I can't see what games I would ever play him in! I posted my thoughts on the unit on the Mantic forums:

    "In the 4 or 5 battles I've had it has never really made its presence felt in the way that it seems it should. I feel I should have one because it provides another De6+ (along with Clan Lord on Fire Drake w/ Ensorcelled) that can hold enemies up and never die. However, I think I've identified a couple of reasons why I feel a little robbed each time I play it:

    1. The CS seems wasted because most things that CS4 is useful for are heros and or monsters, rather than large regiments. The issue here is that it can hold up a horde that it charges (which wouldn't be able to pivot and move out the way in the following turn because of the horde's size) but they tend to be De4+ or De5+ so CS3 would reduce both of those to 2+ anyway. De6+ tend to be heros and monsters, which even if charged can pivot and escape the very short front arc of the Ankylodon when it's their turn. As such, it can never hold up the only units it can actually utilise its full CS4 on. As such, I'd rather drop a one CS and reduce the points cost.

    2. As things can avoid being charged by it quite easily due to its tiny front arc, it spends much of the game pivoting and shooting, which is an absolute waste. Against De3+ it causes an average of 2.6 wounds, De4+ 1.9 wounds, De5+ 1.3 wounds and De6+ 0.6 wounds. As it will tend to spend half of it's turns shooting, even the effectiveness of the already hampered ability to hold things up (ref. point 1) is reduced by half.

    The only way that it's ever properly benefited me in a battle is that it just doesn't die. As such I've been able to walk it over to the other side of an Invade! scenario and that got 250pts towards my total. I can also see that it could be used to hold loot for a whole game in Loot! or sit in the middle in Dominate!, but I always find it a bit galling to spend 1/8th of my entire points total on the off chance that it gets to achieve an objective."

    I suffer the same with him, but I'm having a bit more luck maybe. Some games he performed really well, not 250 points good but still really well.

    I'm not dropping him from my lists, I spent too much time painting him to do that...

    But if even him performing 'really well' doesn't earn his points back, surely that means you should drop him?? There are some units that get some bad stick that really don't deserve it (e.g. Ceremonial Guard, which for some reason people feel are worse than Ancients), but the Ankylodon absolutely does. I know I spent ages painting him, and he's by far the best paint job I've done so far, but he's just too terrible to field.

    I think that it should probably work better with a more defensive gameplay, when you are able to force your opponent to comes to you, even if mainly with breath attacks.

    In theory it should be great at many scenarios involving controlling part of the table, so invade!, dominate!, push! and control!, and probably Pillage! and Loot! when goind for objectives near the middle of the table.

    Sure, if you just trying to do some melee damage take a greater fire elemental, but I can see myself using it instead (or in addition) in the kind of armies that I usualy play.

    Also if you cannot get to your opponent, you can try to bring it to you, so playing with objectives, terrain, or simply by putting other more vulnerable units near it for support might work.

    I will agree however that it probably paid a premium for its versatility, and I would have liked to see it cost a few less points, but probably not more than 10 or 20 points top

    Maybe I will drop him when I get more things painted but as for now he is still there. The thing is that even if he doesn't take his points back the mere presence makes the enemy behave differently, usually in my favor. Future will tell

    Yes, it's so hard to kill that it's almost like deploying a mobile impassable terrain that can do some damage

    Indeed, that is the problem with him actually. Its really hard to price that kind of potential and versatility, and I think he was overpriced for that reason. As you said, not much but still hurts sometimes

    But the relatively small base means it's easily avoidable. Even worse, as mentioned before, the type of units that you would want to be holding up (heros & monsters) have base sizes that allow them to pivot and move out of his front arc even if he's charged them the previous turn.

    And this is where I got to with my Ankylodon before I decided he was too crap to field! I'll finish the howdah cloth, rope highlighting and mouth eventually, but it will have to be after the Clash of Kings competition.

    Those fiery colours on the gekkotah warriors are fantastic. They just look so good! And the detail on the big is amazing unfieldable or not you have done an amazing job here!

    I was not thinking about heroes, but mainly about big hordes that are often deployed near the middle of the table, plus maybe some monsters that might escort them.

    If you are facing dwarves of any kind with a wall of eart elementals, golems, or def 6+ infantry, you will be glad to have the ankylodon. as it will both be able to do some damage and soak some damage too.

    This is the key here, Dwarfs or Abyssal Dwarfs with Golems, they will go to end of the world to avoid that CS4, Def 6 and iron Resolve. Still would be nice to have speed 6 on it...

    @BAE what a beautiful colour scheme on those warriors they look fantastic also the Steggy look really good, too good not to be on the table, play him as something else and get him on parade. ;)

    Speed 6 on what? The Ankylodon is Sp6!

    I'm not saying that he is terrible in absolutely every situation, and I grant that against Earth Elementals he would fare quite well. But this would mean taking him in a list on the off-chance that your opponent plays Dwarfs, and that your Dwarf-playing opponent chooses to field Earth Elementals, and that deployment allows you to place the Ankylodon vaguely near the Earth Elementals. And even if you could absolutely guarantee that you could get into combat with them, a horde of Earth Elementals is only 200 points, 50 less than the Ankylodon. The Ankylodon would cause an average of 4.2 wounds per turn, meaning after 2 turns of combat there is only a 28% chance of the Earth Elementals routing and after 3 turns there is an 82% chance. Add in a couple of turns of manoeuvring to get the Ankylodon into its target and you've spend the whole game using a 250 point unit to counter a 200 point unit, hardly the greatest return on investment. This also assumes that the Ankylodon doesn't get hit by a second unit into its long, open flank and die first.

    Are there any other situations you feel he might make his points back? I would love to find one.
