I'm trying to figure out what colour to paint the spear shaft. Looking at some GW photos, it sometimes looks black, but that would make it pretty flat. Any help appreciated!!!

What about the bamboo effect?
Carving into the spear to give it more deepth?

I paint mine really dark gray then give it a black wash and drybrush it with a lighter gray gives it a bit more texture but black seems to go well.

I might just end up going for black, trying to actually do something really nice with no texture is probably out my painting skills :D.

I use Scorched Brown, but I really like that bamboo idea. I might have to paint up a couple spears to see how it looks.

I also use scoched brown. I have too many left to paint to get any fancier though XD

You could actually take that a step further. Add just a small amount of green stuff then cut it so that it looks like bamboo. Smooth down the edges of a ring (of green stuff), then cut in the middle around the ring. There is your bamboo.

I think I'll settle for brown, I don't want to spend ages on a spear shaft, I'm already a VERY slow painter hahaha. That bamboo idea sounds really cool. I'm not sure I have the green stuff skills though.

I think the black vs. brown (or whatever color) really depends on how it fits into your army as a whole.

And yeah, I dont know who has time to get really fancy on spears unless youre doing just the front row or something.

Personally, I just paint them a flat black. Haven't got the time, patience or commitment to do anything more than that. However, I do have very gold, gold, if you see what I mean, and very silver, silver. Just slap them both on, trying not to go over the lines, and that's that done. So anything other than black would kind of clash.

Yeah I settled for black on my test model and I must say that I'm please with the look it has so far. I'll be posting WIP photos of my test model on my army diary blog tomorrow if I can get decent lighting.

i paint mine calthan brown with a devlan mud wash. it looks really good in my opinion :)
