Hey guys been quite a while since I last posted, been quite busy though but finally managed to find some painting time so here are my Saurus Warriors as a WIP. About to do some more work on them. Currently working out what colour scheme I want to take from here. I'm thinking Averland Sunset markings to brighten up their quite dark blue with Khorne Red base shields. My only concern is yellow markings with gold celestite on the metal, will that look good on the spines that have celestite covers?

Thanks, Kantor Blue for the scales, Caledor Sky for the skin all over washed with Drakenhof Nightshade. Skipping layering, highlights for now just to get them painted ready for the second month of our slow grow league. Just painted the spines on the first guy with two thin coats (you read that in Duncans voice) of Averland Sunset, not sure now whether to go with Flash Gitz Yellow and then a Seraphim Sepia was or vice-versa. Averland is too mustard of a colour by itself, I want that bright look but Seraphim will lend a better shade than Casandora Yellow would, more in keeping with the rest of the model, just wondering how much it'll tone the Flash Gitz down.

Don't wash the yellow with Seraphim it will darken and dirty it, use 2 coats of Casandora yellow then highlight with scar white then glaze with Lamenters yellow then later on when your adding more detail edge with Dorn yellow.
 
Well after being struck down with a cold and my sinuses protesting my continued existence I didn't get further than this last night, just the base two coats of Averland Sunset. I'm still thinking Seraphim Sepia (it's the lighter of the two brown washes) over this base coat to get in the cracks between the scales before very carefully going over that with Flash Gitz Yellow (should add I'm limited on the paints I currently have) to leave the Sepia shaded Averland in the recesses with the bright Flash Gitz popping out. That or do the Flash Gitz Yellow then Sepia before a final coat of Flash Gitz to bring out the colour again. Still I'm liking the contrast this will give the models, probably going to do a base Khorne Red shield but I'm undecided, I want the shields to share similar colourings to my large dinos as if they were made from their deceased war machines hides.

Pretty good so far! I painted some of my saurus with a "yellow" scale spawning too, but my lizards are green not blue.

Well progress is slow but this is where we're up to right now. Currently have three layers of Khorne Red on that guys shield and just thinking how to shade it.

I'm also looking for sources for four more Saurus Warrior bodies, so far cheapest I can find is (all prices in CAD) $10 for 4 including shipping or $18 for 20 including shipping but then I have 16 that I don't need lol. Going to do a forum search here and make a separate post if I don't find anything. Otherwise anyone have a need for 16 Saurus Warrior bodies?
 
Since those guys look very similar to mine I can maybe help with that shade.

I also used Khorne Red (its Army Painter equivalent that is, called Chaos Red) and shaded them dark afterwards. IMO that looks much better than shading them red (I also tried that).
Nuln Oil might work. It really makes those crevices visible, and that's what you probably want.
You can also (before or after shading) drybrush with a slightly brighter red to make the edges a bit highlighted. Don't know a fitting GW color though, from Army Painter I would probably use "Dragon Red".
 
You have a couple of options for shading and highlights,

Nuln oil will bring out the shade of the shield but also darken the whole shield unless you line shade them which is a time hungry project, highlight you can either apply an edge highlight along the top of each scale or drybrush the full shield, really depends on how much time you want to take on them.

If I was doing them I would shade with Druchi violet apply all over, drybrush with squig orange then apply a red glaze to bring the colours together.

Provably Carroburg Crimson, but it´s more of a pinkish than an actual red

Well after all the responses I changed red's to Mephiston Red base coat and have just given all the metal pieces (I forgot the tip of his tail before taking this picture) two thin coats (praise be unto Duncan) of Rhinox Hide before I paint them with Gehenna's Gold, after which I'm going to do an all over Agrax Earthshade before layering back up again. This guy is certainly my guinea pig for this colour scheme but it's also nice to paint him ahead of the rest and actually get an idea of an end point especially when I've already spent around 60 hours on 22 guys and probably have another 60 hours to go before they're even tabletop worthy let alone up to the quality I want them at. Motivation can be hard to find some days!

Well guys I've got my next unit all assembled and primed - the first 15 Saurus Guard (I've actually got 15 bodies in the mail from eBay and can make up another 9 right away with the rest of the kit) - but I'm torn. Do I continue with the same Caledor Sky skin and Kantor Blue scale colour scheme or do I go darker with Kantor Blue skin and Abaddon Black scales or lighter with Caledor Sky scales and either Alaitoc Blue or Hoeth Blue skin? I want a nice cohesive army and so shields will be the same but the lizards themselves I'm not sure. Keeping them the same basic scheme would still enable them to stand out thanks to all the extra gold, armour, earrings, bangles, shrunken heads, etc. that the models have in comparison to the Warriors but then there is the fluff to consider where older Saurus either end up lighter or darker it seems (although sometimes don't change - just to make decisions harder lol).

What would you do and why?
 
Since I am a huge fan of a uniform-looking army I'd paint them like my Warriors, except different shield color (black with gold for example instead red with bronze)
Combined with the bone helmet parts that should set them apart clearly.
If it doesn't: Add some white, red, or yellow markings to them. Perhaps make the metal parts gold instead of bronze. Such things.
 
I might go darker, I think the old fuff was the older and tougher they were, the darker the scales.
 
Loving the dark, richer blue scheme. I'm struggling with nailing down a scheme myself. Should I keep everything uniform/similar colors? Or just all different sorts of colors, somehow maintaining that "uniform but diverse" feeling.

Can't wait to see the guard. I think the look of that bone color skull helmet against the dark blue will REALLY make it POP!

Thanks, I decided to keep the same blue colours on the Guard, I figured too that all the details (and omg there are a lot!) will make them stand out significantly from their younger cousins, I can always add more highlights to their scales later if I want.

Played our monthly game with them all on Sunday and wow are the Guard tanks, soaking up abuse with their 3+ save while they had the Scar-Veteran around, pumping out attacks. Also seeing 20 of them alongside 8 Knights, 24 Warriors and the Scar-Veteran on Carnosaur was a formidable looking force, we played a 2v2 game on the 6x4 board and they easily filled up their half of the board which drew a few comments lol. Just wait till next month when I either add another another Carnosaur, 8 more Knights or another 12 Warriors, or of course I could always buy another box of Guard lol.
