Blog Skinks, Skinks, Skinks, Dino... oh and more Skinks

I do definitely think a glaze will help the skin "pop" a bit more, whether this is and all over glaze or more focused towards the raised areas of the skin, either would be beneficial to the overall skin tone :)

Projects looking great, will defo be keeping my eye on this.

@Crowsfoot, @tom ndege, @Aginor, @Itepixcauh, and @Huanata'Kor thank you for the feedback. I glazed once with the yellow, but may need another pass or two. I think i am using a little too much water with the paint making it too chalky... but i will fix this!

Now to paint the 59 other skinks, 3 skink handlers, 5 skink crew with this green!!!

Cheers

Ok late update:

Im not going to lie, progress has been very slow.... I'm a little worried i wont have the 1000 pts painted by the end of the month. Nonetheless, i will keep painting away. Below is some pictures of the progress (sorry for the horrible lighting, its late at night and i have poor lighting).

So the goal for this weekend is to make a large dent in the painting of the 60 skinks!!

Lastly, has anyone seen this before? Im using this to add some direction to my hobby for this year! and one of the things i am most excited about is converting a Lord Mazdamundi! I have horrible converting skills, but i want to magnetize a platform for this beast. that will be my side project after painting is complete.

Anyways, back to painting. Cheers

Your skinks are looking great! I know the feeling of progress being slow, I always seem to think I'll get a lot more painted in the timeframe that I set but normally fall short, main thing is you're painting and any progress is still progress :)

Hey! This is looking awesome. I love the green scheme and the painting, and obviously those base rollers are working out outrageously well for you…
Concerning those skin tones and how to make them pop out a little: i was thinking why not add some additional tones to the shades as an addition to that yellow glaze? Maybe blueish, reddish, purpleish tones?

I've not seen that before but what a good idea, skinks look good so far as well ;)

Toltecatl, you bring up a great point. the skin still is a little chalky and lack luster. I may wash them again with a yellow and im hoping some tattoo designs will help them pop. originally i was going to swing for a white tattoo but again that may not give it a pop factor. Maybe a purple tattoo will help? the shields will be painted a very dark black with blue hues for highlights. also i will take better pictures so you can actually seethe colours better.

thank you for the feedback, let me know if you have any other thoughts or ideas that i could use to make these skinks pop whilst having a jungle/aquatic feel

cheers

Yep, I guess purple would be better :D

As for the chalky aspect of paint, I've got the same pb.
Actually it may sound like a detail but what kind of palette do you use? I had a very short chat with a very good painter the other day but he did mention the fact that wet palettes tend to make the paint chalkier. Apparently the medium tends to get sucked down through the paper and dissolve in the water; as a result, while your paint is still hydrated, its composition changes and it has a higher proportion of water vs a lesser proportion of medium. Medium gives paint a glossier finish, esp. the GW ones which are rather 'plastic' paints…
Anyway, I thought i'd stop using wet palettes for certain textures such as skin that are supposedly a bit satiny, but i haven't done that yet. I'm painting a cold one right now and the face is looking chalky too… XD glazes do help though. And your skinks look awesome already.

Ok next status update:

Being laboring away on batch painting. As you can see i now have 63 skinks (includes 3 handlers) with 2 layers and a wash down. 2 more highlights and a glaze to go before the skin is complete.

Not going to lie, i feel a little burnt out on these suckers but still trying to make progress before moving to the big dinos!

Cheers

Ok, long time no post. With March just starting i am looking to push out the rest of the work. I do need some help on the bases. Below is my "finshed" skink priest. I use quotations as i need to add tattoos. But, do you think i need to include some static grass or flock? i was thinking of adding some static grass to make the back piece to make it look a little over grown. Maybe some on the rock face to break up the brown too? i feel like the rock face washes out the stone floor, so maybe some green (or maybe that dried winter green) static grass will help. Let me know your thoughts.

Also, quick shout out to @Lherad for posting how he painted the off white skin with pink! I didnt achieve anywhere close to your painting but i really enjoyed adding a unique tone. The old fluff of spawning pools and differing skink hides is what im chasing. So the Skink Chiefs will be blazing orange or maybe a deep red while all the magic wielding skinks will be this off white.

He looks great to me! A little grass couldn't hurt, I think adding green always helps. Just don't cover up too much of that great paintjob! :artist::lurking:

Hey! It's looking awesome, the bone, skin, stone really pop out. @Lherad 's colour scheme is a classic already, it's only fair to emulate it :D
As for the base I see what you mean, it is a big uniform surface indeed. Maybe you could use some green flock to simulate moss, but GW flock is a pretty bright green and that might distract the eye from the skink… there must be some darker/less saturated foliage by The army painter or some other brand that might come in handy. And you could always sculpt a quick electric thread+green stuff liana or something :p
Anyway, the mini looks great as is. It's just an addition you can make but it won't change the overall impression, which is great. Kudos amigo!!

Thank you all for the feedback. I think I may try my hand at basic sculpting and make some vines/roots to help break it up then add some muted dark green flock to act as the moss. This may be something I do when I finish more bases so I can do it all together! Next to paint is the unit of Kroxigors

Just a quick update as we enter the weekend!
I finished the bases of a few skinks trying out colours and possibly the need for more green. Let me know your thoughts!
20180309_151130.jpg 20180309_151043.jpg 20180309_151034.jpg

As for this weekends plan; I have started 3 Kroxigors and the howdah for the stegadon. im going to try knock these out completely tomorrow then move onto the 5 crew and 5 more jav skinks. If all goes well its time to break out the airbrush and get this steg painted too... this is going to be a mess.

Anyways, back to painting! Cheers
