8th Ed. Skrox spam?

So I am going through all my old models and I ran across 10 of the old metal javelin skinks. I thought to myself, "Hey, that's enough for a minimum sized Skrox unit." I promptly assembled a unit. (pic!)



It then dawned on me that this little unit is only worth 105 points. If you had 3 or 4 of them working in tandem, I'm thinking it would be almost as annoying as skirmisher spam. Plus you'd at least have some fighting potential.

Has anyone ever tried spamming units of 10 skinks + 1 Kroxigor?

I have a few times, but I prefer to use larger skrox units to pad the losses that the unit could take in combat. If I am going for a krox only list (not necessarily spam), I will take 2 units of about 40 (at least) skinks and 2 or 3 kroxigors.

Add another to make them 5X3 so you get +2 rank bonus. I'll be trying one like that with a musician on a flank in an upcoming game. My theory is that between numbers, the hitting power of a Krox and the rank bonus they should be able to fend off most skirmishers fairly easily, plus they're fast enough not to get circles around them. Then, in theory, there might be enough of them to charge into a flank or somesuch. Since they're not a big threat compared to the rest of my army, I expect them to be somewhat ignored. May even hold a monster for a turn or two, as six need to die before you're no longer steadfast.

Having just come off a weekend of gaming and using skrox it is, in my opinion, the magic numbers to field hammer units of 18-19 skinks and 2 kroxigor. You keep your rank bonuses longer, you hit hard enough to be effective, and you have plenty of absorbant skinks to eat the wounds for you.

Well it was an odd game on that flank, but my wee Skrox unit performed well. Danced around 14 Swordsmasters, slowing them down (thanks to the musician!) and drew out an eagle (he was trying to maneuver my skrox like I was to the swordsmasters, but I pretty well ignored the bird, shooting it down with blowpipes).

Later on, they charged the rear of the archer unit that had his general, the Lvl 4 wizard. That put the unit in combat so they couldn't stand and shoot when my Engine charged their front. Suffice to say, between the two I think I killed all but two Archers and the archmage, which was promptly run down and killed by the Engine. Safe to say it was a game changer.

That Kroxigor never got a chance to swing all game, mind you, but he certainly looked scary!

So not the perfect test, but I found him to be fairly handy if you can spare the points.
