Blog So, My Painting Blog, The Journey Starts....

Got what I needed to get built and primed built and primed. Alas, with other life demands my painting time is going to be limited this week so I'll be fielding most of these guys unpainted when I play my next game on Thursday (also in the army, painted and not pictured, forty Skinks, a Razordon, and a Salamander).

I finally picked up my paint brush for a little while last night after several days off. Today is deadline day for my day job work in progress, so I doubt I’ll get any painting done today, but hopefully I’ll have some extra time over the next three days before my game Thursday at 5 PM.

All I did was get the base coats down on my test Saurus Warrior. His scales and skin will be two different shades of green, they just both happen to be base coated in Waaagh! Flesh. In the interests of time, I’m going with a simpler scheme than I used on my Saurus Guard (who seem to have a lot more details anyway). I may actually accidentally get the Warriors painted in time for the game. Here’s hoping anyway.

Here's my test-painted Saurus Warrior. All of his buddies will look pretty much just like him. Hopefully less blotchy--I tried a new technique on this model I call "Chardonnay Painting" which involved two glasses of wine. ;)

I like where you are going with this guy even more now! its pretty crazy what a little bit of highlighting can do... I like the choices of green you picked! :greedy:

I am a fan of "Cape Cod" painting myself (vodka/cranberry juice :couchpotato:)

It was suggested to me that I link the battle reports for the games I've been playing in a Four-Week Escalation league here, in case anyone who reads this topic but not the Age of Sigmar Battle Reports topic is interested in what I've actually been doing with these models.

Well, I got distracted watching battle reports and painting tutorials on YouTube, so I'm not nearly a far along as I wanted to be in my "free weekend." Just now got the building done. On the plus side, the sun is actually shining and I may get to spray prime these this afternoon if the humidity drops enough. In the meantime, I think I'm going to start working up the paint scheme for and begin painting on the Saurus Astrolith Bearer. Now that I've studied all the models more closely, I think it's going to be the most challenging one for me, harder even than the Slann Starmaster or the Bastiladon (which, yes, is actually not as complicated as I'd first thought, though it'll be a test of my skills to make the big crystal look good).

I got the remaining models primed just now. I prime in batches, applying heavy duty double sided tape (the kind you buy in paint stores) to a yard stick, then affixing the models. I know a lot of people use that poster tacky stuff, but my other army is Sisters of Battle and some of those models are so heavy that didn't work when I was starting out and I just maintained the habit from then. I'm also a little paranoid about models dropping off as I rotate them upside down and so on. (By the way, as with my Seraphon, I've collected, built, and primed my many Sisters units, but have only painted a few, and now I've reprimed them all because I'm changing their color scheme if and when I get back to 40K).

I know most folks don't prime and paint those clear plastic elevation poles, but I didn't know that when I was starting out and am now continuing to do so so that all my Ripperdactyls match.

The yellow pages to the right are my five-page painting plan for the Saurus Astrolith Bearer, which I wrote up over lunch. Wow, are there a lot of little details on that model! If I get him painted I'll move on to the two Salamanders this evening, as those are comparatively quick and easy with the scheme I'm using for them. I may even just move on to the Salamanders after I get all the base paints down on the Astrolith Bearer. Just depends on my mood!

Interesting way to prime. I use mounting tack putty, jumbo craft sticks, and a cardboard box. Primitive, but it works

That shocking white of the scales will be toned down by the green shade I'll wash over it later, going for the same purple and "ghostly green" I used on my Eternity Warden.

At some point I want to build a little exhaust hood/box set up so I can prime inside when the weather doesn't allow for it out in the back yard.

I use double sided tape stuck onto cardboard strips when I prime, like you say it allows you to turn them any which way without worrying
 
There are twenty skulls on this model as decorative elements. That strikes me as perhaps an excessive number of skulls.
 
An unexpected (but welcome) day job deadline appeared, so I'm not going to get to paint as much as I'd like over the next week, and thus won't get a fully painted 2000 points on the board for my last League game. Not to mention the fact that all the little details on this guy are taking me way longer than I anticipated. But I finally have the Saurus Astrolith Bearer base coated, which is what takes me longest, and I'm reasonably sure I'll finish him today.
