8th Ed. Spears and Shields

I played my first 8th Edition game yesterday against Skaven (just 1000 points, but still fun) and the friend i played against mentioned something that confused me a bit...

He said, that it would be possible to take spears together with shields, as spears aren't listed as two-handed weapons. So is it possible to take spears and still get a 4+ armor save?

i might be being thick here, but spears have never been 2 handed have they? So yes you would still be able to use shields too. obviously you wouldnt be able to get the parry save too if that's what you're meaning?

@Arli: Well, just look up the weapons section in the rulebook, Spears aren't listed as two-handed and are described as defensive weapons (in the "fluff"-part)

@Walach: Of course you'd lose your parry but I was just confused because I always played spears with a 5+ armour save and then all of a sudden they would have had a 4+ armour save....

my understanding of the rule is that to use spears, takes both hands and you cannot have the shield equiped and use a spear (not effectively).

I could be wrong...

spears are 1 handed weapons.

You get the 4+ save, you just can't get the parry bonus.

Statistically, that 4+ save is still pretty good. I will take spears for sure with my large unit of saurus (only 32 of them total).

Yeah you have always been able to use spears and shields together...
