Were you aware that George Lucas always planned for Luke to have a long-lost twin blonde sister but was not always planning for it to be Leia.

Luke's blonde sister was going to be the central character of episodes 7, 8, and 9.

He didn't say it, but I believe GL's intent was for Luke and Leia to end up together. GL was inspired by Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials and the everyman hero winning the princess is a big part of old school action serials.

I believe GL changed the trajectory because Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher had good chemistry and was what the fans were rooting for.
