Can someone please explain this to me...

The way I have it the TG has the following stats.
[5+] Scaly Skin 5+
[4+] Light Armour
[3+] Shield

and then the Hits are calculated at a Strength 6 correct?
Their S4 + the +S2 of the halberd.

If so I can start seeing the use of TG.

Um,,,, no,
Halbards are +1 strength,
And they also require two hands,
So in combat you have a 4+ save and S5

Against shooting or magic you can use e shields where you do get a 3+ save

Found it in he rulebook, and yes your are correct, the shield comes in play when shot at, while the halberd is used with both hands in CQC, but correct.

Other than that what's your feelings about the Temple Guard, worth it or not?

depends.
i personally favor running a lone slann, but if you insist on making a "deathstar" unit with tg and a slann then be my guest :) in my experience both things work fine. bring loads of tg and the toad with 3+ ranks warbanner and bsb. = enough static cr to chop down your opponents units.

I've been using a slann with 21 temple guard (for a 5x5 unit) in the last dozen or so of my 8th edition games. Its an awsome unit but you absolutly have to keep its flanks protected, I use 3 kroxigors or a steg on one side, and try and keep some terrain on the other side. The only games I've lost have been because I've left a flank open on the TG/slann, but I'm getting better at avoiding this.
