Does anyone have any alternatives to attach a flyer stick to a base like the ones you get in a terradon box? It's always a pain when those are missing and not all flying models have them for some inexplicable reason. Patterns for 3D printing would also be fine, but since I have no idea how these things are called I don't know what to search for.

That is weird the box didn't come with them

I put my center terradon on a jungle tree. The center trunk was just a wood skewer with a magnet on top; worked great!

The bases minus the jungle plant leaves:

Link to how I make my trees. @Jorgik also has some amazing one in his blog, way better thank mine!

nah, the terradon box usually has them. But for example my Kroak, my slann, and an old pointy elf on a griffon I'm currently putting together don't have any similar piece. Which makes them far harder to put together. So I'm looking for a similar piece that I can 3D-print (or buy) somewhere and use in these cases.

Oh that makes sense. I wouldn't know about a 3D print option sadly... I would just use either aforementioned wood skewers or dowels. and cover it with jungle foilage.

Maybe some clear plastic rods? There has gotta be some cheap ones somewhere; attach a magnet to the top maybe?

I have the rods, I need something at the bottom so it is actually stable. Like the lil bit of rock the clear rod of a terradon goes into.

    so this bit:
    upload_2020-2-4_9-44-28.png

Because just sticking the rod on top of a base is not sturdy enough.

The only option I've found so far are either to poke a hole in my base, which doesn't work very well, the rod never ends up straight. Plus the only way to make the hole is burn it and burning plastic ain't good for you. Or to put a load of rubbish around the rod (e.g. on the griffon I've stuck a bunch of stones areound it.) but that significantly reduces the effective length of the rod and doesn't necesarly look good.

Yup that makes sense. I had to take some other pieces of plastic/clay and drilled a small hole inside to slot the rod, plus plenty of other stuff to shore the base to keep it from being too top heavy with the terradon on top

You could always do a decorative base that doesn't use the rods. Currently, i have 6 Ripperdactyls with trees as bases, and my Kroak is getting a small bush in the same vein as a connector.

I wanted all my Terradons to have the longer flying stalks. You get 1 long and 2 short ones in the box, if I remember rightly?

I contacted GW who sent me 2 long stalks, free of charge! I was gobsmacked.

    Maybe, give GW a call?

It sounds like you are missing the base of the flying stand ? (I think that might be the term to search for: flying stand )

The item missing is the flying stand base then?

Washers might be a workable substitute. If I tried that, I’d take one rod to a hardware store, find a tiny washer with the correct diameter centre hole, then buy about three per rod. A stack of three should be as thick as the plastic base would have been.

The tool you need to make a hole in a base is a Pin Vise. Are you without a Pin Vise?

Alternatively a drill bit operated by hand should do the trick. Get the correct size, the least expensive brand will do, because it only needs to drill through plastic.

Option order new parts from Litko:

They have several other styles of bases (squares even) besides these.

Option Aquire Correctly Sized Drill Bit

They sell these ^ individually. With that driver base on the drill bit, it is easy to drill through plastic by hand. Just make sure the bit is an exact match to the peg on the plastic rod.

I’m not sure if your just referencing flying stalks but I have these 'Aztec Pillars' That are designed into the lizardmen theme almost perfectly. I bought them a while back for the exact same reason, I wanted to put a flying stalk on top of them and then the ripperdactyls/terradons would have so much more hight. There are so many cool details in the model, Im pretty sure I got them from an obscure website that specialised in bases ect, I will try my best to find it again...

I buy almost exclusively second hand mini's and as such fliers NEVER come with in tact flying stalks. I use these:

    http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/a...-3-mm-clear.html?search_query=rods&results=36

I secure them by drilling a hole the same width as the rod through the base, packing green stuff or similar on the underside to create an anchor point for the rod. If I have a spare bit of rubble etc to go on top I will drill through that too to get an even more solid connection.

pro tip for fliers - make the model detachable from the stalk by sticking a magnet the same width as the rod to the tip of the rod and then stick another magnet to the hole the rod is supposed to go into on the model (making sure polarity is correct). This is invaluable when it comes to storage, movement, playing games with them and preventing breakages I have found.

    **EDIT**

    Just seen they do these:

    http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/rotation-magnets-n52/427-rotation-magnets-size-s.html

Wish these were available when I did my rippers

Yeah the flying stand would be the correct term I guess.

I have zero tools, so mostly I'm stuck with heating a sewing pin or knife and pressing that through the base. Ah well ,guess I should go and get some alternative tools.

That'd be an entire base though, would prefer it to just be a small lil block like the ones the terradons get so I can stick it on a scenic base.

but yeah, I guess getting a handdrill or something similar would be the best option then. Shame, had hoped there'd be some nicer looking alternatives than my own attempts at making a rock :p

A Pin Vise is kind of an essential tool for this hobby. Pro Tip: GW sells one; theirs is 2x if not 3x the cost*** of other brands of Pin Vices.

Do you have some Green Stuff?

If you do, I have a fourth option you could try.

***I apologize; it is between 3x and 4x more. (Edit)

I have some dried up green stuff that I used about twice :p

And yeah, so far I've mostly just managed with clippers. I used to have some files when I first started with the lord of the rings models when I was like 12. But those have rusted in the time I didn't use them. And since so far I could manage with clippers I never bothered getting anything new. In fairness, I haven't made much complicated yet :p
