8th Ed. The BEST close combat units in all of Warhammer ~BONUS MATCHES~

Another tough match for the Fireborn:

Neither was particularly good at putting unsaved wounds through on the other, but the Soul Grinder was better. Once the Fireborn's output started to wane due to casualties sustained, they began losing rounds of combat which bled their wounds via their Unstable special rule.

Well, at least it gives the Soul Grinder another victory.

Of course, the benefit of the Soul Grinder is also being mobile artillery which is still good in a fight. For me it would be a flanking attack once it had no viable shooting options left (as it has a decent movement IIRC).

It's a very different type of monster, and as you say, it has utility elsewhere. Still, because of its awful 40kesque model, I can't help but cheer against it.

The Soul Grinder was a bad matchup for the Fireborn, but the HPA is not.

The classic regeneration vs. flaming attacks matchup. The odds were always stacked against the HPA, but it did manage not to lose massively.

They even lose against the arakhnarok? :p
It appears that way, unless I made an error somewhere. Not having any static combat resolution really hurt them, if they had just 1 point of static combat res they would have broken the Arachnarok in the first round.

No matter if the Black Guard form up with narrow or wide, they have a REALLY BAD day going up against the Fireborn.

The Fireborn are tailor made to take down opponents like the Black Guard. No contest.

I could already see by the Fireborn statline that they are a pretty decent unit. Against low armour and low toughness they will go through them like a meat grinder.

Ouch! At least one of the Dark Elf units that the Fireborn is able to devour ;)

Grrr, Imrahil
About time, the Fireborn weren't faring too well.

Exactly. Unlike the Destroyer, Fireborn have to be careful and avoid targets with significant armour or high toughness. Fireborn are going to get pounded when they fight the Demigryph Knights and especially against the Skullcrushers.

By the way, is a Destroyer an auto-include for your CD army? (if you can afford it by points)

For my lists... YES. I play at 3000 points and my rare loadout will typically be one of the following:
  • Destroyer + 2 Hellcannons
  • 2 Destroyers
I may one day give 3 Hellcannons a try, but I'm a bit skeptical on that one.

Hellcannons are absolutely an auto-include. The strength 5 template weapon is awesome and it's statline (as a artillery weapon that doubles up as a pretty effective monster) is ridiculous.

We've spoken before about it on another thread. Absolutely mental and if I do end up getting CD's then I'll have a minimum of two. Plus at least one Destroyer.

(Which model do you use for the destroyer?)

They're pretty solid, and even better in a CD army than a WoC army!

They do eat up their rare allotment points pretty quickly. At 3,000 points, I have 750 points worth of rare units I can take, but even then I always run out of rare points. I'd love to be able to take 2 Destroyers and 1 Hellcannon in a list.

Since it has no official model you can go with just about anything. It's a fun opportunity to buy some cool monsters from armies other than your own and paint them up in a CD theme.

My first Destroyer (still in progress ) is an Ogre Kingdom Stonehorn without any riders. I'm not sure what my second one will be, but it will be something different. In lore, each one is created unique, so sky's the limit. I'd love to field a Skaraac the Bloodborn model, but it is extremely expensive.
